Subject: TreaditionalSongForum,Sheffield, Saturda From: Steve Gardham Date: 17 Jun 14 - 02:03 PM The TSF is a national collective of like-minded folksong researchers who meet together 3-4 times a year to compare notes and give presentations on related topics. This Saturday's meeting is at Sheffield University down Gell St. not far from where the ring road meets Glossop Road. All are welcome and there is no charge. The morning is taken up with TSF business but researchers and interested parties are welcome to attend the members discussing their latest research topics. The afternoon has 4 presentations by TSF members and then an open forum looking at the Child Ballads. My presentation will be looking at images of Child Ballads that first appeared on 17thc English broadsides and subsequently were found in oral tradition. Ruairidh Greig will then give a presentation on Sheffield area house-visiting songs which he recorded in the early 70s. This will include actual recordings of the source singers. Martin Graebe will then present Baring Gould's collecting activities in Yorkshire when he was Vicar at Horbury, and before he became a folk song collector in Devon. The last presentation is from James MacDonald of the Song Collectors' Collective, a group of mainly younger collectors who have been out recording source singers in recent years, and he will be playing video and recordings of their latest findings. The last hour will be spent discussing Child Ballads with emphasis on the following perspectives: Likely origins; relationship to manuscript and print; the disparate nature of the corpus as it stands, editorial practices of the collectors. If numbers make it worthwhile Raymond Greenoaken has offered to host a ballad singing session in a local hostelry in the evening. Further details can be obtained from the Tradsong website. |
