Sad news at the passing of Casey Kasem, the internationally famous radio broadcaster with the cheerful manner and gentle voice who became the king of the top 40 countdown with a syndicated show that ran for decades. He was 82.

I suppose he was part of all our lives growing up. Sad in the way the family played to and fro with him in the past few months of his life. I suppose money was their motive.

From the Washington Post "Style" section:

As radio and pop culture splintered, Casey Kasem was keeping it together

"It was backward, old-fashioned, impossibly uncool. Every DJ in the land rolled his eyes at the persistent popularity of Casey's countdown, his long-distance dedications, his tear-jerking tales of men in uniform sending their love and a song to their girl back home. And every station manager who could land the rights to "AT40" held on for dear life, because although the jocks made fun, the listeners were totally addicted."

Many happy memories of his passion and presentation for music. Sadly today another of my old favorites died. Jazz musician and composer Horace Silver, famed for pioneering hard bop, died aged 85

Horace Silver actually died yesterday, just to be completely accurate, but yeh, wonderful musician and composer. NPR did a lovely remembrance with segments of prior interviews on ATC yesterday afternoon.

Here's Casey Kasem on the David Letterman show. I think he did a great job:Pretty good-lookin' guy, dontchathink?

Here's Casey Kasem in 1983: He always sounded like a normal person. Maybe that was his gift.

In addition to all of his other accomplishments, I will always think of him fondly as the voice of Peter Cottontail.
