I wonder if any mudcatters ever attended the Dock Boggs Festival in Norton, VA. It started a couple of years before Dock passed on and was driven by Mike Seeger. It was Mike who found Dock in the early 60s and got him active on the college circuit. It has been touch and go with the festival since we lost Mike a few years ago and I don't know if it was held last year. Dock had been inactive for 30 years, but he really enjoyed the young people. Doc Watson was at one of the early festivals. Dock might have looked like a benign grandfatherly type in later years, but he was a tough nut when he was young. I met his nephew Johnny Hunsucker who traveled with Dock in the 30s after the depression ended his recording career, he got laid off at the mine and his wife had kicked him out. Johnny had some stories that would curl your hair. Mike was a tremendous loss. Nobody has done more for Appalachian music and he did it all out of love.
