She likely won't find it so amusing when she's charged with theft.

I think it's either a Crock, and a selling ploy or if it's true, it sounds like the guy had some kind of breakdown.

Cheers

The explanatory text from the ebay ad:-

"I am selling my soon to be ex husband's Ibanez guitar. It is used, much like how I feel after our 8 year relationship, and the strings will probably need replacing, much like the ones on my heart. I am selling as he left me one day, leaving me a letter saying he needed 'space' and most of his stuff. He has since then decided he is not coming back but he doesnt know why?

Many people believe that he is cheating on me, but I met up with him the other day to discuss our forthcoming divorce and he looks like a down and out hobo, strange as he managed to remember his razor, although maybe he has forgotten how to use it. What is more worrying is that he didnt take his toothbrush, so I cant imagine any other woman going there unless they have a very strange hobo fetish!

He has come to the conclusion that he is divorcing me because we have had 'too good a relationship' and 'we didnt argue enough' during the 8 years we have been together, so I can only presume he likes to be screamed at repeatedly and had wished I had made his life a misery, I am obviously very sorry for not being the evil, vindictive woman that he always wanted me to be! So unfortunately, as I am the caring, thoughtful wife that I have always been, he has no grounds to divorce me, or the money to, as he has never had two pennies to rub together since I have known him, and generally only has ever had any money when he has been with me.

I am now left with the wonderful task of divorcing (and paying for said divorce) and I feel that he should contribute, especially as I paid for about 95% of our wedding, only a mere year and a half ago! Like I said, he has never had 2 pennies to rub together, and probably never will again, thus completing his new hobo way of life. I would have been a very rich woman if I had never met him. So I have now decided to sell everything he has left behind to contribute towards the cost of my divorce, as I feel I should not have to pay a penny towards something that according to him 'is not my fault' and 'I have done nothing wrong' , especially as he has to cheek to leave all of his stuff all over my house and has not even offered to come and remove it, I have decided I will have to do it for him.

I don't know that much else about the guitar, only that he probably loved it more than me and looked after it better too. One day karma will give him all that he deserves, and today might be the start of it, and hopefully he will rot in hell where he belongs! Happy Bidding!"

Sounds to me like the man is suffering from severe depression and needs medical back-up urgently

My guess is he was having a shave and noticed she had squeezed the toothpaste tube at the wrong end. He just had to get out, not bothering to clean his teeth and razor still in hand.

The guest at 07.06 was I. Having suffered frim depression for much of my life, and not wanting to discuss it with anyone, I know how debilitating it can be. Reason and logic do not apply to anyone suffering from depression and, if I am correct, he has my full sympathy. Comments like the one above, albeit probably meant in jest, are inane and demonstrate the lack of knowledge and understanding that we are all guilty of.

All I can say is, apart from the relief me and the wife are still relatively happily together after more than 30 years
[the last 10 legally married],

this story of 'pennyless unemployabhle guitarists scrounging off women with good jobs & salaries'
sounds too close for comfort......

I eventually gathered the courage to show this ebay posting to my wife,
her wry laughing reaction and constant sideways glances at me were quite uncomfortable..

It sounds to me like somebody composed that for a lit or journalism class on 'how to manipulate a reader's emotions."

In any case, don't bid on the guitar. It will come loaded with bad karma of more than one sort.

Yes, of course.. this could be 'fake' for all sorts of reasons....

But I'm prepared to give the benefit of the doubt and take it at face value as 'genuine'.

The guitar is now sold - might be interesting to check any 'feedback' in a few days or so.

My understanding is that when you marry your possessions become joint possessions, so she's not guilty of theft as they're still married. If indeed she paid for the bulk of the wedding costs and is footing the bill for the divorce as well I don't entirely blame her for wanting some cash from the belongings he brought into the marriage. He hasn't come to collect the guitar, nor did he take it with him - the diagnosis of severe depression may indeed be the right one but there's no way of being sure of that from what's written here.

Can't help but notice the posts suggesting she's guilty of theft seem to come from male 'catters.   No sympathy for the relatively new wife, deserted by husband for no reason she can understand? Just because it's a guitar she's selling and this is a music forum?

She said she was selling her husband's guitar. That makes it theft regardless the sex of the spouse. .

It sounds to me as if he, arguably, abandoned the guitar. It might well not be theft for her to sell it. Of course the law differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

But it does remind me of something.

For a while, recently, an old mate of the family lodged with me. For a long time, and a long time ago, he had been an item with my older daughter and it was a relationship with violence on both sides (she smashed up his Scalectrix set!). But that is not the current point.

At a family party they reconnected.

He was planning to move to another country (in due course) for a better job, and moved to different lodgings. I lent him a guitar - not an expensive one.

Then he disappeared. Turned up again as an item with said daughter again.

Then he vanished again with a goodly dollop of her money and her laptop with irreplaceable photos on. I tried to find him for obvious reasons - and it transpired that he had left, at said daughters "his guitar" that she was planning to sell on ebay to get back at him.

Guess whose guitar that was!

Dear Guest
I don't know what the sex of the spouse has to do with it - when you marry, your possessions become joint possessions, regardless of whether you are male or female. The words in the church service are "all my worldly goods I thee endow", but whether or not the words are in the form of marriage the effect is the same.   In divorce settlements (which I've been involved in drafting in my previous day job) each party has to agree which items belong to which party.   In this case, he left "his" possessions and despite meeting up with her to discuss the divorce has done nothing to reclaim "his" guitar. No police force in the UK would touch this as an example of theft because it clearly isn't.
As for Guest Professor Lambeau - what century are you living in? Good grief! She didn't leave HIM in any case - he has left HER.

Anne, if that's the way it is then that's the way it is. Seems like it could be a can of worms though. If s/he'd gone out and sold everything that was jointly owned that would be ok? Different country, different laws. Have a nice day.

Anne - that is NOT the law of the UK. It may be your law - but why, like so many USAians, do you assume that US law prevails worldwide? It offends many.

Bridge, since she said "all my worldly goods I thee endow", and it's from the Anglican service, don't assume she's talking about US law. (Although I'm not an expert in marriage vows.)

Its plain and simple he was and is an arse hole he left her with the lamest reason ever so pay back is a bitch. She has in no way broken the the law if he was to involve the police they would more than likely applaud her. She is a ver successful woman who deserves so much better.
