Subject: RE: Art Thieme - New Website! From: Rex Date: 09 Jul 14 - 02:05 PM I've been waiting for the 9th to come around to wish Art a happy birthday and what should I find but this?! How grand and how good for Chris to release this on such a day. Art, here's wishing you many happy returns of the day. I sure like the website. Chris, thank you for including Cowboy's Barbara Allen. That song is mighty important to me. I perform it often and do not fail to tell of Art discovering Del Bray in Cheyenne and learning this song and passing it on to the world. Much obliged, Rex |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - New Website! From: GUEST,C.T. Thieme Date: 09 Jul 14 - 03:34 PM BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!! No, not a set of Ginsu Knives, but just as good. Brian Gill tirelessly worked on a project to put a vast amount of Dad's work into a collection. That's now available, in PDF format, on the website under "Articles and Songbook." We can't thank him enough for the effort. Thank you all for the kind words. I'll pass them along to Dad. Headed to see him in a few minutes. C. |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - New Website! From: GUEST,Jerome Clark Date: 10 Jul 14 - 07:28 PM This is wonderful, Art and Chris, and thanks for putting it up. When I lived in Chicago in the 1970s and '80s, the local "folk" music was mostly rootless singer-songwriters. I remember stumbling upon Art and hearing the real stuff: the ballads and traditional songs, all delivered with jokes and puns of the most groan-inducing variety. A few years ago, through his brother Richard, I got to know Art a little via email and music he generously sent me on CDs through the mail. What an honor and delight that was. Good to know he's still making his mark. |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - New Website! From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Jul 14 - 02:05 AM Belated birthday greeting from me, too! I've been exploring the songbook check out p.40 for a photo of Pete Seeger playing a panjo (= bedpan banjo!) pp.78-79 - The Great Turtle Drive p.93 - amazing photo of retired miner - a work of Art. p.141 - story of the recording of 93 year old Paul Durst (b.1868)- a survivor of the Ludlow masssacre "When Art was on stage at the No Exit, there was a kind of magic in the air. With humor, grace and quite a bit of social commentary, Art's songs, stories and corny jokes transported us into life and times past and brought that history right back home for us to enjoy." Peter Steinberg p.196 & many thankyous to Brian Gill for creating the songbook & to Pete for editing it I'm planning to take the pic to a Pete Seeger 6 month memorial concert in a couple of weeks. sandra |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - New Website! From: Rex Date: 11 Jul 14 - 10:55 AM Hey Art, it's mighty good to hear from you. Mighty good to know you had some fun yesterday as well. I've had the pleasure of sharing songs and sources with you and treasure some of the material I've gotten. Yet I was chompin' at the bit to get a look at your songbook posted online. Not having the fastest net connection that didn't happen until last night but it finally all got loaded. Then I was up late looking through every page. Of course I love the material but even more so the stories behind some of these songs. And then the wonderful photos. I especially am grateful for your discography in the back. I see now that your son and many good people came together not just to collect your songs but to bring honor to you and they sure enough did it. It's a damn fine songbook. Good on ye! Rex |
