This coming Saturday, July 19th, will be the regular monthly Shanty, Forebitter and Ballad Session at the Press Room, Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

We had an incredible turnout last month for the Barry Finn Memorial Sing and it would be really nice if some of the singers who make a point to come to that event could find a way to come join us more often. Yes, I know it's summer...

I want to remind everyone that the August singaround will be on the SECOND Saturday of the month, August 9th, to accommodate a session member who could only schedule his wedding on the third Saturday. (Yes, I know, too, how complicated THOSE plans can be!)

But please come this Saturday; let's make the rafters roar!

Another announcement is Sail Portsmouth, hosted by the Piscataqua Maritime Commission, will have two ships (the privateer Lynx and schooner Mystic) in Portsmouth on the weekend of August 2 & 3. If you or your group want to sing for the people viewing the ships, please contact Steve Smith at 603-498-1709.

Okay. It's summer and the crew was more sparse than usual, but we sang loudly, had a great time, and kept the energy going until we had to shut it down.

The crew was me (Linn Schulz), Nick Noble who hosts "The Folk Revival" on Worcester, MA's WICN, Jeri, Gina and Bill Dunlap just back from England, Don Hale, Bob Eaton back from climbing Denali and having non-musical fun for three months, W.B., Dave Nune, Dianne Lavoie, Carol Coronis, Alan Eaton after he got back from working in Tamworth, a surprise visit from Pete Hale, Tami Bill (Ranger1) who brought her boss along, and Gail Diderickson. Jaki was our server and a fine job he did of keeping us from dying of thirst.

Justine (and Steve), we missed you. Hope it was something GOOD that came up and kept you from coming.

And what we sang was --
1. Bear Away, Yankee - Jeri
2. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn Schulz
3. The Girls Around Cape Horn - Don Hale
4. Old Jim River - Nick Noble
5. What Fortunes Guide a Sailor - Gina Dunlap (her lyrics to an old tune)
6. The Alabama - Bill Dunlap
7. A Long Time Ago - Bob Eaton (which was when we last heard him sing...)
8. Plum Island National Anthem [Richard Johnson] - Linn Schulz
9. Rolling to Cairo-Town (Roustabout Song) - Don Hale
10. Rolling Down the Bay to Julianna - Gina Dunlap
11. Ballad of the Nancy Belle - Nick Noble
12. Boys of Killybegs - Bob Eaton
13. Cannery Shed - Linn Schulz
14. Rolling Down the River - Bill Dunlap
15. A Sailor's Prayer [Rod MacDonald] - Gina Dunlap
16. Harbors of Home [Joan Sprung] - Linn Schulz
17. Eddystone Light - Nick Noble & Don Hale
18. Three Score and Ten - Bob Eaton
19. Rolling Down to Old Maui - Bill Dunlap
20. Congo River - Dianne Lavoie
21. Hanging Johnny - Jeri
22. White Squall - Nick Noble
23. Cape Horn Road - Gina Dunlap (which just won the songwriter's
      contest at Fastnet)
24. The Rosabella - Don Hale
25. Blow the Man Down - Bill Dunlap
26. Flash Company - Linn Schulz (unaccompanied; I think it's the first
time I've sung it since Tom died)
27. Bring a Little Water, Sylvie - Carol Coronis
28. Black Betty - Dianne Lavoie
29. Skye Boat Song - Nick Noble
30. Farewell to Tarwaithie - Don Hale

Be back...

Back again. (I took a watermelon break and also brought some stuff in from the car.)

Oh! And add to the crew Carol Pierson and Bill Lehrman from Boston!

31. General Taylor - Alan Eaton
32. The Jeannie C. - Dianne Lavoie
33. Sammy's Bar - Bill Dunlap
34. Shipyard Apprentice - Bob Eaton (This was the
first song Bob ever sang at The Press Room.)
35. Sailor, Sailor, Won't You Marry Me? - Carol Coronis
(Was this the song Tami Bill joined in on?)
36. Maggie May - Linn Schulz
37. Outward Bound - Don Hale
38. A Whale of a Tale - Nick Noble
39. What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor? - it was a request by a tourist
and the whole company helped putting together verses
40. Willie Taylor - Carol Coronis
41. Fire Marengo - Bill Dunlap
42. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth - Linn Schulz
43. Tinker, Tailor - Dianne Lavoie
44. parody of "Paradise Street" written and sung by Bill Dunlap
(after seeing the gentrification of the area today)
45. The Adventures of the Rear Admiral and His Maid - Linn Schulz
(poem, written by me in study hall when I was 15)
46. Clear Away the Morning - Bob Eaton
47. New York Girls (Can't You Dance the Polka) - Pete Hale
48. Cape Cod Girls - Alan Eaton
49. Day of the Clipper [Dave Romanoff] - Nick Noble
50. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn Schulz
51. Nelson's Prayer - Don Hale

Somewhere in there, I sang Tom Lewis's "Sailor's Prayer" and forgot to write it down.

Please make corrections if you see I've transcribed something wrong!

Andy & Tami, thanks for the pulled pork nachos. I always think I'm going to order food when I go...
...er, when I go, I'm usually hungry but end up with a drink. Then I go home and scavenge.

I LOVED Gina's song's, especially Cape Horn Road (and the other ones).

I'd love them on a recording, too.

Thanks, Tami. I didn't make note of that (or two of MY songs) at the time. And I forgot to note when Bill and Carol joined us. What else did I miss and not remember while I was logging this?

It's not easy being a scribe...(whine, whine...wine!)

Just ate supper out on the deck and, it's dangerous eating on the deck and seeing all kinds of things to be done, so I used two pieces of the cabinetry I tore out of the bathroom a couple weeks ago to shore up the foot part of the lounge chair in the hemlock room on the other side of that flower bed. What that also means is it's fewer heavy pieces of lumber and plywood that I have to walk around the house, down the hill, and into the lower cellar door. Yeehah. I guess that means I just killed the proverbial multiple target with one stone.

Sorry that I had to miss this one. I was off in Saratoga Springs, NY, doing a workshop at a special event. Thanks for the song list and the description of who attended.

I'm looking forward to the August session.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

Remember, Charlie, (and everybody), the August shanty sing will be on the SECOND Saturday of the month -- August 9. Pete Hale is having a wedding bash on the third Saturday.
