Subject: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window
From: Mr Red

discovered this 6 months or more ago.
Not sure when it became usable.

But if you centre click on a hyperlink it opens that page in a new tab or window. (Most websites anyway)

The way I set up FireFox portable it means I can carry on reading the thread list (eg) while the selected thread(s) are loading.

Been meaning to share this wheeze with the community. Enjoy.

OK, ten years might be an exaggeration, but certainly eight:

"in Internet Explorer 7, you can middle-click a link to open the link"

Guest Ed.

Just because you've known it for 10 years or even 7 doesn't mean everyone knows.

It's not something I've seen widely broadcast, so I reckon there are a lot who don't know about it.

I didn't know about it. I've been using right-click to select "open in new tab" dozens of times each day. Thank you, Mr Red.

The first mouse I used was the four-button puck on a Perq Unix workstation in 1984, and on that you could reassign the button functions for every program separately. So mice with more than two buttons are not exactly news to me. But I didn't realize the wheel-button on a Windows machine could do that until this thread, so thanks.

And if the mouse is not over a link, then you can quickly scroll around the page (up/down and left/right both at the same time) by moving the mouse while holding down the wheel button. That works in my word processor too (Atlantis).

refresh - because this is the first time I have returned to this thread.

This wheeze is (for many) one of those "unknown, knowns" as Rumpsfelt (sic) would say.
I found it by accident. And one or two professionals I have spoken with didn't know it.

They must be professionals leading sheltered lives. ;-)

Here's a new one for you to try: use the F5 key to refresh pages.

SRS

F5 to refresh pages is not new news.

And all these suggestions also work on MacOS - that was news to me too.

There are a very few differences between OSes and browsers though:
Keyboard shortcuts, browsers

With Firefox - and probably other browsers - there is an option to specify whether a new tab opens in foreground or background, e.g. when using middle-click.

A useful shortcut is control-F5 - especially when a page's layout is screwed up (the css).

Most professionals are too busy getting on with the work that they are paid for.
