From: Richie

Hi,

In an effort to make music available that is currently unavailable, I'm putting Cox's 2nd collection of songs and ballads which aremainly from West Virginia- published 1939.

This edition in two volumes was edited by Cox, Halpert, Herzog(music) and George Boswell, with a general editor Coffin. These are the top collectors and researchers in the US in the 1930s.

It's over 200 pages and I've started on it here: http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/traditional-ballads--folk-songs-mainly-from-wv.aspx

There are several other fairly rare publications which I also have one additional book from the National Service Bureau- which is another project for later.

Here are the contents:

Cox wrote Folk Songs of the South (almost all from West Virginia) which was published in 1925 and is still one of the great collections today. His notes and knowledge of the songs and ballads rivaled Davis in Virginia, who also published two great collections.

During the 1920s at the University of West Virginia you found John Harrington Cox, Louis Chappell, and Josiah Combs three important collectors. Also there in 1924 were student collectors Carey Woofter and Patrick Gainer who unfortunately did more damage than good- as all of their work is suspect. Gainer continued collecting and published one book in 1972 and contributed to others.

Cox was born in 1863 and this was his last publication- he was in his late 70s at the time,

Richie

Is your subject heading the title of the 2 volumes? I haven't got this.

How many verses has the Bramble Briar version got? The title is interesting 'The Merchant's Daughter', closer to the perceived original than British versions. The original title may have been something like 'The Merchant's Daughter of Bridgwater.' At least 2 American versions are more than twice as long as any British version.

I do hope you get these added to the website, Richie. These more obscure versions are more welcome than the common ones. I presume the Child versions are in Bronson. If so the others are more important, now Bronson is readily available.
