Subject: RE: Hurdy Gurdy in Ireland? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Jul 14 - 02:28 PM A simple Google search on "Hurdy Gurdy in Ireland -museum" comes up with a fair number of hits. The radio museum comes up in the results but has no bearing on that question so I selected it out. SRS |
Subject: Hurdy Gurdy in Ireland? From: GUEST,Wireharp Date: 23 Jul 14 - 12:25 PM Hello, My shiny new hurdy-gurdy arrived yesterday from Altarwinds (George Leverett). It is gorgeous! Now.. I was wondering if anyone out there might have any information regarding hurdies in Ireland. Not playing Irish music on them per se (I know that lots of folks do that), but more along the lines of their use. Were they ever used at fairs, festivals etc. Is there any history of the instrument in Ireland? England's use is documented, if for nothing other than Hogarth's 1734 "Southwark Fair". I was hoping to be pointed towards similar evidence in the Irish tradition, if there is any. Thanks in advance for any help. Robert Mouland |
