My Country Dance book by C. Sharp certainly has circles and squares with numbers in, but without the noses (arrows).

Way back, there was a caller, from California I think, who came up with a system of drawing dance moves.

He drew circles for gals, squares for guys, attached an arrow for the way they were facing and put their couple number in the square or circle.

I go to a Folk Dance evening where they rather look down on "Ceilidh Dancing", but I know the people there who teach the dances work out the moves on the kitchen table using smarties or tiddlywinks.

Reading that back it sounds rather kinky.

I only said I wondered why! Danenis started the thread by asking for a specific dance from a specific source. That's why I wondered - now I know, Bert was 'only trying to be helpful'.

Perhaps he only looked at the Youtube name of the dance. I wondered what '3 ladies chain' had to do with Tavern in the Town, but watched it anyway as it was called by Dudley Laufman. He has some great words of wisdom on the Traditional Dance callers forum. I'll have to work out how to use that figure (will need some practising in front of a cd player as I'm not expert at improvising).

Thanks, Mo. As I didn't know the particular dance that danensis was looking for I posted a square dance to the tune "There is a Tavern in the Town".

I figured that it wouldn't matter if it was the wrong one 'cos it could easily be ignored if it wasn't wanted.

Or it could be used in a medley with the wanted dance.

Or, the three ladies chain movement could be used, and often was, in a patter call.

Not quite sure why doc.tom had to make that comment when I was just trying to be helpful.

I'm glad that callers are keeping these dances alive.

Not quite sure why Bert put up a link to a different dance. BobL has the figures right [not so sure about the barring]. The dance came from Bob Cann and was also kbnown as 'Bob's Favourite' - you have to move FAST though.

Square sets of four couples, numbered anticlockwise.
A (16 bars). First couple separate, go halfway round the outside, into the middle through third couple. 1s swing while the rest join hands in a ring and circle once around to the left. 1s drop back to place.
B (24 bars). Everybody do-si-do corner, do-si-do partner, left allemande corners, Grand Chain all the way round to place. Swing partners if there's time.
Repeat with other couples leading in turn.

While I have the LP out of the loft, does anybody need the directions for La Russe, Buttered Peas, Hullichan Jig, Waves of Tory, Heel-and-Toe Polka, Danish Double Quadrille, Jumping Joan, Dorset Four Hand Reel or Cumberland Square Eight?

On Ashley Hutchings album "Kicking up the Sawdust" there is a square dance to the tune "There is a Tavern in the Town". Now I want to teach it, I can't find the LP with the moves. Does anyone have a copy of the album and could let me know the moves? I don't know if the dance steps are given on the CD.
