Subject: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 05 Aug 14 - 06:19 PM This one deserves a thread all on its own. The new system is up and working well according to the Council. The locals don't understand it. The Tourist Information don't understand it. The Park and Ride finishes at 6:00pm and there is no overnight parking. There is a local bylaw which makes it an offence to sleep in vehicles overnight anywhere on public roads in Whitby. You can though sleep during the day! Don't forget you read it first on Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,# Date: 05 Aug 14 - 06:29 PM http://www.whitby.ca/en/residents/parking.asp Clear as a bel/ mud. Be safe. Don't park in Whitby. They need the space for automobiles and trucks. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 05 Aug 14 - 06:50 PM I'm leaving the car at home this year and taking the train. The train is about half the cost what it would cost me in diesel, and I won't have any parking problems. Plus, I can read on the train. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter Date: 05 Aug 14 - 06:58 PM "There is a local bylaw which makes it an offence to sleep in vehicles overnight anywhere on public roads in Whitby" I thought there always was, have they actually started enforcing it? The scheme is a little more complicated than in most towns but isn't difficult to understand. The only difference from any other CPZ scheme that I have seen is the need to get a card to allow you to use the short stay spaces. If you have booked accomodation in the CPZ your landlord should be able to provide a visitor parking pass. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST Date: 05 Aug 14 - 07:02 PM I was curious to see how accurate the OP was but the search function on the Whitby Gazette website isn't returning any articles later than August 2013 |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 05 Aug 14 - 07:03 PM I rang Whitby Tourist Office today to buy a weekly parking ticket for Folk Festival Week which is in ten days time and they said they were unable to send me one in time! I have previously had no problem and have purchased a weekly permit for about £25 and parked opposite the Endeavour without much trouble but you do have to sit and wait for an available space but never waited more than ten minutes. Prices are now £6 per day (no weekly permit) so I guess I will have to keep going backwards and forward to the car each day to put another ticket on the car! As we are staying in a holiday cottage just of the pedestrian precinct shouldn't be too much trouble but the other system seemed easier. I appreciate it must be really difficult for the residents in a seaside town that sees an influx of tourists (I live in Sidmouth so should know!) but there are surely ways to make it easier for the holiday maker who after all put a lot of money in to the local economy. There ...... rant over, it certainly won't spoil my enjoyment of the week! |

Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: Jeri Date: 05 Aug 14 - 08:20 PM "Parking at Whitby" would make a great parody of "Dancing at Whitsun". |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: JHW Date: 06 Aug 14 - 04:53 AM Should be remembered that this is a SCARBOROUGH council scheme. They're jealous of Whitby and will try whatever to screw the place. Looks like they're on a winner here. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST Date: 06 Aug 14 - 05:19 AM Local inhabitants are just as irked by the parking regulations. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter Date: 06 Aug 14 - 05:38 AM "Local inhabitants are just as irked by the parking regulations. " It is most unusual to find a community pleased when a CPZ is introduced although GUEST:guest its talking about car park charges rather than the new on-street arrangements. There seems to be an anomaly in the scheme, by my reading of the rules a guest house can get permits for customers' cars to be parked on-street which would only cost a pound for a week while the OP has to pay full rate in a car park as he is in self catering. Is Spring Vale still free of yellow lines? Its outside the new CPZ and always seemed to attract a lot of long term parking during the fetival in previous years. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 06 Aug 14 - 06:33 AM It certainly won't be a case of Scarborough being jealous of Whitby. Parking regulations are supposed to be brought in to control parking, congestion etc. Unfortunately, local councils tend to see them as a revenue raiser and a means of keeping council taxes down. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: Les in Chorlton Date: 06 Aug 14 - 06:36 AM hey Jeri, my thoughts too: There's a row of straight yellow lines in these latter days They're covering the streets where the folk used to laze. There's a field of them tickets, a message from the Queen. And the folkies go parking in Whitby But the folkies can't park down in Whitby With all respect to AJM and The Ladies |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: Jeri Date: 06 Aug 14 - 07:09 AM Good start, Les! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST Date: 06 Aug 14 - 08:25 AM "Prices are now £6 per day (no weekly permit) so I guess I will have to keep going backwards and forward to the car each day to put another ticket on the car! ." You can get a seven day ticket for the following car parks: Whitby: West Cliff, Church Street, Marina Back, Abbey Headland, Pavilion Drive and Pavilion Top. They are £6 per day but you don't need to keep buying new tickets. If guest said "Endeavour" to the tourist office they may have thought he meant Endeavour Warf which has a 24 hour limit rather than Church Street. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: BobKnight Date: 06 Aug 14 - 09:04 AM I thought parking restrictione were suspended during Folk Week. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: JP2 Date: 06 Aug 14 - 09:13 AM I certainly don't hold any sort of brief for SBC but I think you'll find North Yorks County Council are equally involved as they are the Highways Authority for Whitby. The original plan involved several distinct areas and,if you couldn't find a bit of free road in the area where your house was then you weren't allowed to park in another area. I never did find out where you were supposed to go. We were promised a Resident's Parking Scheme, just like they have in Scarborough, where,I was informed by a SBC official "It works really well".Ho! Ho! We hatched a plan in the Black Horse last week to charter a Ro/Ro ferry and moor up in the Harbour to provide town centre parking for Folk Week, but I dont think anything came of it!!!! The Car Park across from the Endeavour is called Church Street. JP2. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Date: 06 Aug 14 - 09:15 AM If only...! I've had to virtually stop going to Whitby altogether now that these draconian new restrictions are in force. I simply can't get about as easily nowadays (old age!) and I don't like to plan to just arrive on spec then have to spend ages driving back and forth finding somewhere outside the CPZ - especially with all the darting about between venues that is becoming necessary. I do like the parody, Les - it has distinct possibilities. I will give it some further thought pronto!! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: Nick Date: 06 Aug 14 - 10:52 AM I have parked somewhere near the FILO pub in the past and walked down - is that still an option? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter Date: 06 Aug 14 - 12:34 PM As far as I can make out from the map from the link near the top of the page that whole hillside behind the station is outside of the CPZ Of course, not having been to Whitby since last festival I don't know if any streets outside the CPZ have had yellow lines added since last year. That is the sort of thing I would have liked to hear from people with local knowledge. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST Date: 06 Aug 14 - 01:05 PM Moorley Man just when was the last time you went to Whitby. The new parking restrictions have only came into force this spring I understand. The darting around between venues has existed for donkeys years. The fact that you may not have gone for some time has little to do with either I suspect. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Roger Knowles Date: 06 Aug 14 - 01:34 PM I think we'll give it a miss this year. The council obviously have disregarded disabled drivers. Whitby is just too hilly. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Date: 06 Aug 14 - 03:27 PM Roger - spot on. Guest -- you're totally wrong there. As a matter of fact, I was over in Whitby only a few weeks ago, and was observing the new restrictions (which came in stages between January and the spring) at first hand (after having consulted various websites and made enquiries of several "authorities" beforehand). The various maps on the Internet are of differing configurations, and some information sources contradict each other. And as for the new "scratchcard" scheme, well that would put Kafka to shame. Re Folk Week itself, I last visited Folk Week for a day trip only, the year before last and the year before. I was always happy to dart about between venues, until the year when I got stranded on the "wrong" side of the swing bridge when it failed... and in the years since then it's been more difficult due to decreasing mobility. We're none of us getting any younger, so don't knock advancing age, it'll happen to you too one day! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter Date: 06 Aug 14 - 03:30 PM " The council obviously have disregarded disabled drivers." ???? You mean apart from parking without time limit in any of the disc zones or pay and display bays? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter Date: 06 Aug 14 - 05:28 PM "The various maps on the Internet are of differing configurations, and some information sources contradict each other." I have only found one map on the SBC website which I linked early in the thread. Could you provide links to any contradictory information published by SBC? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: nutty Date: 07 Aug 14 - 03:55 AM As I understand the situation no exemption from paying is made in any Scarborough BC carpark. This applies even in ' Disabled ' bays You can only park for free (max 3 hrs) on the highway provided other restrictions are not in place. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Date: 07 Aug 14 - 04:54 AM Guest Peter - Sorry if I didn't make this clear. No, this was not contradictory information published by SBC, but by other websites purporting to provide "current" information on parking in Whitby. The Googling process will direct you to the same ones I'm sure, but I deleted them from my Browser History when I realised they were a waste of space so didn't feel it worth bookmarking any links. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 07 Aug 14 - 06:59 PM FACTS There are no concessions for the disabled. There are no concessions for pensioners (P & R). There are no concessions for the folk festival officials. There are concessions for the regatta. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Aug 14 - 02:53 AM There are fifty parking tickets Stuck on my car I stopped but a moment For a pint at a bar But for Folk Week in Whitby Quiet life turns bizarre Don't look for car parking in Whitby..... (do you call them "parking tickets" on your side of the Pond?) |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: BobKnight Date: 08 Aug 14 - 12:33 PM I may have to park the car on the outskirts. The Festival Office has just informed me that I'll be staying quite close to the Dolphin this year, so I reckon parking anywhere near is not "on." Last year I was staying on Elgin Road not far fron FILO, quite a climb!! |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Date: 08 Aug 14 - 01:49 PM Parody almost complete now Jeri (and thanks too, Les, for confirming that "great minds think alike"!). I hope to have a draft ready for a tryout at a club tonight or later this weekend. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Noreen Date: 08 Aug 14 - 05:15 PM I like it, Joe :) Yes, we do call the confounded things parking tickets. |

Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Mysha Date: 09 Aug 14 - 11:08 AM Hi, So, with these concessions, where could one park one's dinghy? Bye Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 09 Aug 14 - 12:01 PM The regatta is this weekend, so probably no concessions after Monday! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 09 Aug 14 - 03:06 PM Correct Kitty! |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 09 Aug 14 - 03:08 PM A clarification; The concessions are for the regatta event and not for those attending. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Mysha Date: 09 Aug 14 - 04:27 PM Oh, bugger. There goes my plan to win the lottery, buy up a yacht immediately, sail over, drag a big ship's boat ashore to occupy several parking spaces, and put it on high enough supports to allow a few mudcatters to park underneath. Well, you can't win them all. Bye Mysha |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST Date: 09 Aug 14 - 06:14 PM Cost of a weeks ticket at Whitby - £162.00 Cost of a weeks accommodation at Whitby - £500-ish? Cost of getting there? Cost of eating all week? Parking £6 a day. Full week = £42 at the most. Get over it for fucks sake. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 09 Aug 14 - 10:03 PM Eloquently put perhaps. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Les in Chorlton Date: 10 Aug 14 - 04:50 AM Anyone finished and sung the song in public yet? Les |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Date: 10 Aug 14 - 06:00 AM Yes, Les - finished and had one tentative outing on Friday. Was hoping to perform it at Saltburn yesterday (which would've been an apt location!), but singing opportunities were virtually non-existent! I realise I still need to fine-tune the draft a bit however (as is often the way with these things!)... |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Les in Chorlton Date: 10 Aug 14 - 06:29 AM Thanks Mr Man, sounds great fun - best of luck for Whitby - could be sunny? |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 10 Aug 14 - 10:01 AM Bloody hell. Hark at Prospero and his breakdown of costs for Whitby week. The festival is quite expensive enough as it is. By the end of Whitby my wallet will be so devoid of cash the moths will move out for want of company. Get over it, he says. Any chance of a handout to help me get over it? |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Aug 14 - 10:25 AM I agree though. We've been used to thinking we can park free anywhere. Although the cost of petrol is far more than the price of parking we notice parking charges, but just fill up the car when it's empty and drive where we like without thinking how much it is costing. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Tootler Date: 10 Aug 14 - 05:12 PM Was hoping to perform it at Saltburn yesterday (which would've been an apt location!), but singing opportunities were virtually non-existent! Rubbish! I spent most of yesterday in singarounds. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Tootler Date: 10 Aug 14 - 05:45 PM Correction to some "facts" quoted above. The Park and Ride closes at 7pm not 6pm as stated somewhere above. Bus Pass holders get half price on the P & R. Source: North Yorks Council's relevant web page Unfortunately, the timetable link is returning a "404 Page not available" error. It was OK before the weekend but then Arriva are not the best of bus companies. When I checked at the end of last week, the last bus to the P & R was just before 6.45 from the bus station. I've parked my car at Sleights before now and gone and fetched it at 6pm when you can use the car parks for free. By that time most day visitors have gone home and there are plenty of spaces. Last year I came early and there were spaces by the leisure centre so I bought a day ticket. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest Date: 10 Aug 14 - 08:48 PM The P & R is irrelevant as it is of no use to anyone staying for more than a day. There were certainly no concessions for Bus Passes when the service started but that could well have been the drivers not being given the necessary information / training. I have come across problems with the York P & R and that has been running for a number of years now. Arriva are certainly NOT one of the best bus operators. I assume Tootler only makes the odd day visit so yet again any observations made are irrelevant to anyone actually visiting for more than a day. Whitby, in common with most tourist destinations, is costly. I don't know how the locals can afford to live there. That said I have just returned from a week at Sidmouth where everything is very expensive and no - you don't get what you pay through the nose for. I noticed a large central disused property so if Wetherspoons can be persuaded to take it on then perhaps the other businesses would be encouraged not to rip off (take the piss out of) the Folk Festival and its attendees. |
Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,New guy Date: 12 Aug 14 - 11:39 AM Come on Tootles give it a go - one more posting will send it vinyl! |
