Voices from the Old Bailey

Series 3: episode 4 - Transportation

Sept 4 BBC 4 at 09:00 BST and 21:30 BST

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04g10zc

Then will be on BBC iPlayer for listening from overseas.

Transportation
Series 3 Episode 4 of 4
Duration: 43 minutes

First broadcast: Thursday 04 September 2014

Half a million people were transported during the 18th century - to America, the West Indies, and Australia. Historians are just beginning to track their progress from the Old Bailey to their lives beyond. What they're discovering is as dramatic and colourful as any novel.

Amanda Vickery tells the stories of three criminals who were transported during the 18th and early 19th centuries, and of one group of desperate women who refused to go, throwing the entire penal system into chaos.

Recorded on location in the Prospect of Whitby pub in Wapping, on the River Thames, near where the prisoners were kept in hulks on the river and where many were hanged.

Contributors include Professor Peter King of Leicester University, leading historian of crime; Robert Shoemaker, Professor of History at Sheffield University and the co-founder of the Old Bailey Online; and historian of Empire, Zoe Laidlaw, from Queen Mary, University of London, herself the descendent of a transported convict who was convicted in the Old Bailey.

With readings by Charlotte Stockley, Ewan Bailey, David Holt, and Steven Webb, and specially arranged music from singer Guy Hughes and pianist David Owen Norris.

Produced by Elizabeth Burke.
A Loftus production for BBC Radio 4.

Transportation.
I'm listening to 'Shoplifting'on 28th August which oft results in a transportation sentence.
Next week Thur 9 am (4 Sept) the topic will be 'Transportation' which might well be of interest

There are three more episodes to come. Maybe it will be used to introduce one of the others.

But they didn't use the music in the programme! Wonder why it was good enough for the trailer ...

I would think it should generate royalties - and it will be interesting to see if it's used as theme or incidental music for the programmes. Generally to be applauded, I would say, and it's focussed my attention on the trails which is very clever of them.

we must be grateful for small mercies.
A band with a god, a notsominor deity and the best ceilidh drummer in the land amongst its membership deserves better though.

Having heard a number of trails with backing music I'd assumed the music was relevant to the show or would be featured. Seems not though.

The programme being trailed is "Voices from the Old Bailey" on Thursday. Don't know if the actual program will use selections.

Someone at Radio 4 has a thing about the album. This morning they were using part of "The Maid and the Palmer" as backing music.

I notice that the instrumental part of the "George and George's son" track by Brass Monkey is currently being used as the backing music for a Radio 4 program trail. Will this generate any royalties for them or is the extract too short.
