Subject: BS: Non-Literary Quotable Quotes From: MGM·Lion Date: 13 Aug 14 - 06:49 AM Not all great quotations come from works of literature. This thread is to record some from other sources:- Cartoons, for instance: I have always loved the speech bubble from Charles Schulz's incomparable 'Peanuts' --- "A good education is the next best thing to a pushy mother." Some are witty things people have said — or maybe quoted; I wonder if the late Robin Williams's "Cocaine is God's way of telling you that you are making too much money", quoted in his Times obit, was indeed his own invention or from another source. Either way, there it is. More examples? ≈Michael≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: Non-Literary Quotable Quotes From: GUEST,Ed Date: 13 Aug 14 - 07:19 AM Do you know when that Williams quote dates from? I remember hearing it said by a pop star in the early '80s, but whether he just lifted it from Williams, I know not. |

Subject: RE: BS: Non-Literary Quotable Quotes From: Musket Date: 13 Aug 14 - 11:11 AM It depends what you class as literature. Charles Shultz had his literature presented in the philosophy of a cartoon, as did Reg Smythe and many more. It's still literature unless pretentious elitist definitions are in use. So, here's a literary quote from Reg Smythe, in the words of Andy Capp; "Half the world is trying to have fun and the other half are trying to stop them." |
