Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,cujimmy Date: 03 Sep 14 - 03:05 PM Yes it probebly was HK, there was congestion at several points all the way back to aroun York, wish I had gone via A171 / A19 on Saturday morning. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 03 Sep 14 - 12:36 PM We used the Guisborough road both ways in the end, to and from the A19, to avoid Pickering. Fine coming into Whitby, but we got stuck behind an agricultural vehicle coming back - but it was probably still quicker than going through Pickering on a Saturday morning! Kitty |

Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 25 Aug 14 - 02:51 PM Glad you got the message Mo. Another thought is to take the same route as us and carry on down the A19 (Selby is bypassed) to the M62. We left at 11.20 incidentally so should theoretically have been in the middle of the hold ups that Joe mentions. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 25 Aug 14 - 12:23 PM We left at 8.15, came home via Helmsley & Thirsk and got stuck behind a couple of silage trailers. Then fine till nearly home. Tried the A59 last year but it took ages. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Joe Nicholson Date: 25 Aug 14 - 11:38 AM Set of from Whitby 10AM got almost to Slieghts ran in to Traffic thought about Pickering a bugger on Saturdays and Hemsley turned round and took the Guisborough road down to the A19 across to the A1M into Harrogate at 11-50. No towns no hold-ups. Joe N |

Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 24 Aug 14 - 08:20 AM Just for Mo - a bit late for this year but we came back over the moors as follows. Whitby to Aislaby (the one just out of Whitby, there is one near Pickering), Egton (cars only - definitely not motor homes or caravans), Egton Bridge, take beginning of Goathland road and then straight on to Stape (3 ton limit), Cropton (brewery there), Wrelton, A170 west, Nunnington, Hovingham, Sheriff Hutton, Strensall, A1237 west (this avoids stupid roundabout with traffic lights at Hopgrove), join A64 west of York and then take your pick. We live just south of Selby so took the A64 east to the A19 (next junction). Estimated driving time about 2 hours as opposed to 1hour 20min on a quiet run in winter or out of season. We stopped off for shopping at Dringhouses Lidl and still did it in less than 3 hours with next to no stress and the biggest traffic holdup was 30 seconds getting off the A64. We live much closer to Whitby than you but find that treating the journey as part of the enjoyment and not just a means to an end works for us, it's a beautiful run. Don't know where in Cheshire you are but the A59 used to be quite a pleasant cross country route in the days before the M62. Best of luck and roll on next year. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 23 Aug 14 - 04:51 PM We were wondering as we queued to get from the M6 to the M56 and again along the A49 this afternoon if we would get a quicker run home by staying in Whitby till teatime - assuming we could afford the parking (sorry, that's another thread). |

Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Sapper minus cookie Date: 19 Aug 14 - 04:18 AM A thread to be resurrected in 11 months time methinks! My preferred route from mid-Derbyshire is M1 from J29, then M18/A1 to the A168 and, after a refreshment stop in Thirsk pick up the A170 to Pickering and the A169. This route has the advantage of avoiding the frequent log jam on the York Ring-road and often stop-start crawl towards Malton. An alternative, should the A1 be a bit deamic, as it was on Saturday with traffic backed well up the M18 slip-road and the A1(M) it's self at less than a crawl, is to carry on to J6 of the M18 and pick up the A614 & A1041 to Selby, then the A19 to Thirsk. If using the A19 route, at York, you have the option of going clockwise round the Ring-road, slower roads, but, if before mid-afternoon usually much less traffic, whilst anti-clockwise has slightly faster roads, but for a Saturday morning on a summer's day, is usually choked up and more than a bit stop-start. However, as the Rosedale Abbey agricultural show is on the Saturday, it's a de-tour up the back-roads from just after Kirbymoorside via Keldholme and Huttonle-hole to call in there for a couple of hours so I can spend lots of money on pickles, sauces, jams, marmalades and PIES!!! |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: nutty Date: 17 Aug 14 - 06:47 AM Hi Malcolm - I'm sure Dick and Susan, who manage Mudcat's Digital Tradition database, said they were coming again this year - they are alsmost sure to be found in a ballad workshop/session somewhere. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Noreen Date: 17 Aug 14 - 03:48 AM Hi Joe, I thought of you again on Friday as we drove past the Hole of Horcum en route to Whitby. I remember stopping there to show you the wonderful view of the purple heather- clad moors and how taken you were with it. You can revisit it on Google earth, perhaps |

Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 15 Aug 14 - 07:30 PM Hi Joe I think it was Graham Pirt that introduced us - he seems not to frequent mudcat these days, and, unfortunately I can understand why in some ways. These old eyes of mine are getting tired. I thought I had seen somewhere that you would at be Whitby this year. Is it perhaps another member of your team? And lets not say never - you never know! cheers Malcolm |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Aug 14 - 02:10 PM Hi, Malcolm- I think I was introduced to you when I was in Whitby in 2002, but that was a five-minute encounter. I doubt that I'll ever get to Whitby again, but the 2002 Whitby Folk Week was an event I'll remember for the rest of my life. -Joe Offer in California- |

Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 15 Aug 14 - 09:57 AM I was just trying to save someone a long detour which would probably also take longer. The day trippers heading east have usually disappeared before 2pm in my experience. However the choice is whoevers. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Mysha Date: 15 Aug 14 - 07:28 AM Hi, I'm getting the impression it's a rocky road to Whitby. I'll get me cap on the way out, Mysha |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 15 Aug 14 - 07:13 AM I'm not having a pop at you Malcolm, covering your back is more like it, if someone thinks the roads will be easy cos they've been told so by someone who visits Whitby regularly that person ain't going to be very popular if the roads are packed !! |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 15 Aug 14 - 06:28 AM Well there we are Raggybits - I'm wrong again! I'll not bother any more. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 15 Aug 14 - 02:41 AM Have to disagree with Malcolm regarding the A64 on a Sunday afternoon, if the weather is good there is often a large amount of traffic due to a backlog cause by the traffic earlier in the day. However it is the most direct route to Whitby for those coming from places west .... Leeds, Manchester, Cheshire etc etc Carry some good CD's and relax with the music is the best you can do. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 14 Aug 14 - 07:36 PM Hi Kitty The A64 on Sunday heading east should not be a problem, especially in the afternoon. Hi Joe I am not a dedicated Mudcatter as you know but it might be good to meet up for a natter. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Aug 14 - 05:47 PM Hi, Kitty - yes, it was Alanww, and it was a wonderful three weeks in England. It was so nice to meet so many Mudcatters, and I've been friends with many of them for all these years since. The most memorable event I attended at Whitby was a children's concert -- both Cyril Tawney and Janet Russell performed. I believe Whitby is were I first encountered Maureen Jelks - she was wonderful. And the afternoon concerts at Robin Hood's Bay were delightful, as was sharing a house with Dick and Susan. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Aug 14 - 05:21 PM Hi Joe I remember meeting you at the Mudgather in the Albion (now demolished and turned into flats) in Whitby in 2002, and if your driver on the journey to Whitby was possibly called Alan, I think that would have been catter Alanww, as that was also, I think, the year that, thanks to Alanww, I'd already met Noreen at the Middle Bar reunion in Sidmouth. We're coming up to Whitby on Sunday from the White Horse festival in Oxfordshire, and I think will be using the scenic route via A1(M) and Thirsk, rather than the A64. Kitty |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 14 Aug 14 - 04:29 PM Hi Joe, I find it quite amusing that an American would refer to any drive in the UK as long-distance. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Aug 14 - 02:59 PM My first long-distance ride in the UK was on the road from Chateau Bill Sables to Whitby in August 2002. I think Noreen was in the back seat, and I forget the name of the guy who was driving (was it Alan?). I kept trying to operate the controls, since I was sitting in the front seat on the left side, where the driver of a U.S. car is supposed to sit. The traffic was horrendous, but it was wonderful to go through all that heather. It was the first time I had ever seen heather in blossom. It's a ride I won't forget. Mouldy's husband Ian gave me a nice tour of North York Moor on the way back from Whitby; and then I had a nice afternoon with Mouldy and her family. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 14 Aug 14 - 01:05 PM And there was me thinking I was being helpful in the wider sense having run an event in early July where people from the south were glad to take my advice and avoid the 30+ miles of slow and restricted roadworks on the M1. The heading was "road to Whitby" and not everyone is coming from Cheshire. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: r.padgett Date: 14 Aug 14 - 12:49 PM What more did you expect? lol Ray |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Alan Day Date: 14 Aug 14 - 12:45 PM We were going along this road but not sure it was correct so we stopped to ask a local. "Excuse me,are we on the right road for Whitby." His Reply "Yes ". A man of few words Al |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Nick Date: 14 Aug 14 - 11:17 AM ... one of the possible routes from Cheshire being via Leicester. Just one of the less chosen ones I'd guess. :) (But I'd agree from the south) |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 14 Aug 14 - 10:53 AM Coming from the south avoid the M1 between Leicester area and M18. Suggest the A46, A1, A1(M), A64. We have an avoiding route learned over many years from the A1079 junction on the A64 but I do it on auto pilot so could not be sure what it looks like on a map. It always takes about twenty minutes longer than the conventional trip would take on a good day. Just be patient is all I can advise. |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Aug 14 - 10:11 AM Johnny Handle has a great tune about that. (I guessed that would be what you were asking about, from the subject line). |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Nick Date: 14 Aug 14 - 10:01 AM Agree 100% with Steve. Definitely Southern side of York Depends when you are coming but avoid Saturday morning the A64 can be a pain as huge flocks of sheep head to Scarborough, Bridlington etc etc It can back up to the edge of York |
Subject: RE: road to whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 14 Aug 14 - 09:57 AM Depending which route you take from York and what time of day it's usually better to take the south York bypass with faster roads particularly if coming off at the Scarborough road. For clearer roads I'd recommend M62 A1M A64. You can pick up roadworks online and any holdups on the day on Radio 2. |
Subject: road to whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 14 Aug 14 - 08:48 AM Are there any road works to avoid. Several possible routes from Cheshire, though Google takes us round the York bypass. |
