Thanks George. That one takes me back to The Cap And Gown in Reading in the late seventies. Richard would often drop in for a floor spot. I had a very priveleged youth, because others, who dropped in for floor spots, included Phil Beer and Bill Zorn (together), Steve Knightley (with Paul and Phil), Ian A Anderson and Maggie Holland (then Hot Vultures), Bill Boazmnan, Spredthick (Hilary Jones and Simon Mayor), Jo and Gerald ("GT") Moore, Mike Cooper, Richard Cox-Smith and the late Johnny Collins.

Maybe someone was reminded of the request by the other recent Richard Digance thread - which seems to have fizzled out (thankfully).

Twelve years plus to answer that request.

Is this a new Mudcat record?

east end nostalgia.
funny, how nobody writes songs about being terrorised by the Kray twins.

Enjoy...

Drinking with Rosie
(Richard Digance)

Since I was a nipper I had this 'ere wish:
To marry a girl who could drink like a fish.
I'd need no excuses for getting home late.
She'd be in an equally horrible state.
When I hit the beer, and my Rosie gin
She just held back her head and she shovelled it in.
And she would sing songs that a girl shouldn't sing
When Rosie went drinking with me.

(chorus) Everyone wanted to be drinking with Rosie
When Rosie went drinking with me.
She never had eyes for good looking guys
I was the apple in her old mince pies.
Everyone wanted to be drinking with Rosie
When Rosie went drinking with me.

Each Saturday night we'd have a good scrub
And go for a bit of do down the pub.
We'd have a few beers and a bit of a croon
And nobody cared if you sang out of tune.
Old Joe's piano was as old as could be
And the lady what played it was seventy-three.
She grabbed handfuls of notes in no particular key
When Rosie went drinking with me.

(chorus)

A fella once said she should drink from a trough
So in her certain ways she showed him where to get off.
After she clocked him we counted we counted to ten,
She helped him get up and she kneed him again.
That's one thing for Rosie – she does a good job.
Now he's wishing he'd never opened his gob.
She 'd take on the pub for a handful of bob
When Rosie went drinking with me.

(chorus twice, second time slow staggering rhuthm)

It was sung by Richard Digance with a little help from some students (very drunk). The line is "I was the apple of her old mince pies"

Look through the questions for the last month - someone posted the lyrics in response to my query a few weeks ago.

Hi, anyone no the lyrics of this:

Everybody wants to be drinking with Rosie, But Rosie's drinking with me

I heard it once and could never find it since. Searched it on the DB already. Does that ring a bell anyone?

Thanks, Charles Boisvert, c.boisvert@open.ac.uk
