Check in when you can, guys and gals. Hoping all is well, or at least no injury or significant property damage.

Your concern is in reference to this quake, Janie? http://news.yahoo.com/usgs-6-0-earthquake-shakes-northern-california-111129187.html

Oops. Yes, maeve. And thanks for posting the link, which I should have done. From news reports so far, doesn't sound like there is much fear of injuries or deaths, but I think we have Mudcatters who may have been at risk of some property damage, large or small. Hope not, but am concerned for them.

I agree- it will be good to hear from some of our 'Catter friends in the northern California area... when they have the time and the means. Thanks for starting this thread, Janie.

We're about 40 miles from the epicenter. The quake woke us up at 3:20 with a shaking/rolling motion that felt as if we were on a waterbed. It continued for almost a minute. No damage at our house or, as far as we've heard, in this area. The city of Napa, and specifically some historic brick buildings, suffered significant damage.

I didn't notice anything at all, but we rarely feel earthquakes here in the Sierra. My stepson at San Francisco State felt it and got a pretty good jolt, but no damage.

Thanks for checking in, and glad to learn no damage among those of you who have.

My west coast geography is a bit fuzzy. Does Clairebear live where she was likely to be at risk? And if so, has anyone heard from her? I know she isn't on Mudcat much these days, and not likely to check in here.

There are reports of two critical injuries - one being a child and the other an adult.
I'm hoping both will recover.

Napa/Napa Valley of course is famous for all the wines produced in that area. One guy lost a bottle of wine (one bottle alone) worth thousands of dollars and thousands of dollars worth of other very expensive wines.

Claire does not live very close to Napa, so I'm sure she's OK.

Several wineries have reported lots of broken bottles. Some may consider that a tragedy...

One of my granddaughters lives in Oakland across from San Francisco. She says she was jolted awake but is fine.

I contacted Claire and she's fine - about 100 miles from the epicentre so no problem for her.

When visiting relatives in Sacramento, we always drove over to Napa Valley to visit the wineries, or took the special train which traversed through the vineyards and countryside (serving excellent beef and wines on the way).

This is not the first time earthquake caused breakage of wine bottles.
At Beringer (National Register Historic Places), in the 1870s-1880s, Chinese workers hand-chiseled 1200 feet into Spring Mountain, creating storage tunnels with 58-60 F temperature and good humidity.
At some time, an earthquake partially collapsed a side tunnel. One may look through the opening and see collapsed shelving loaded with bottled wines.
Don't know the date.

We're about 250 miles from Napa so we felt nothing. Saw the news on TV and read about it in the paper just like the rest of you.

What ChanteyLass said.

(And knowing now that few people were injured, should I start worrying about higher prices for previously inexpensive, good Napa Valley wines?)

Some friends and I were talking about the earthquake this morning. We realized that when we were experiencing a quake, we rarely had a first thought that it was an earthquake. Last time we had a temblor here in the Sierra Foothills, I thought for sure that a bear was walking around on my roof. Took me a while to realized it was an earthquake.
Same with the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. I was all alone in the office at about 5:10 PM, talking on the phone. All of a sudden, I felt seasick - but had no idea at first it was an earthquake.

I just, last week, found a blended California white that I like called Bear Flag. Well, it was recommended to me by a buddy who works at a liquor store (NB Liquor; provincial). I drink two small glasses of "wine" per year and that's at SiL's Xmas dinner. However, Bob said to me, "Yer not back here to buy that crap Yankee beer again! Why not have a good wine?". He talked me into it. I bought a bottle of the red too but its not to my liking.

Sorry to have taken so long to check in. Yes, everything's fine at my house. The quake rattled the second floor a bit (which is where my bedroom is, so it woke me up), but no worse than when the washer goes through a spin cycle. My son, on the ground floor, slept right through it.

I read in the paper that a boy of 13 was airlifted out in critical condition because a fireplace fell on him. Maybe this was a fancy two-story fireplace whose chimney soared up a couple stories. (But why wasn't he safe in his bed at 3 am?)

I've also seen a picture of a brick building in the town of Napa with significant damage.

Both these examples fit with something we know about earthquakes: they are harder on buildings built of brick or stone than on wooden buildings. For one thing, the shaking damages the mortar. For another, the walls are rigid and cannot yield. I'm willing to bet that the winery buildings that were damaged were built of stone.

If you live where there are quakes, live in a wood-frame house. When hit by a quake, it flexes and jiggles. Have smoke detectors, of course.

There were pictures of one winery which had many barrels damaged, and it seems to have done some serious stuff to several others.

It was the 1906 "San Francisco" quake that damaged the Beringer Winery, and kept them broke for a decade.

Due to sheer size and vineyards across California, Beringer, Mondavi and Gallo prices will not show much effect.

The small boutique wineries will suffer the most. A barrel = about 300 bottles, and this could mean price spikes. Silver Oak is one of those producing fine (expensive) "boutique" wines that was hard hit.
