I listened to it twice; not for any folk song example but for the real stories, transportation being the topic it is in folk song.

There is also the forgotten Charles Chilton ballad opera about the founding of NSW:

and the 'Folk on 2' Special on The Transports

PS:    oldbaileyonline.org has all the extant trial transcripts from 17th century up to the early 20th. It's a great read, either for researching specific cases or just dipping in at random.

I know I really should get out more, but I have to point out that no prisoners from the hulks were hanged at Wapping. Until 1783, public hangings in London were done at Tyburn (now Marble Arch) and then up to about 1868 outside Newgate Prison. CJB probably has in mind hangings at Execution Dock at Wapping, which were done under the jurisdiction of Admiralty courts to punish pirates and mutineers.

Not much fun being a pedant - so much is intensely irritating.

The singer was Guy Hughes, as mentioned in the original post. Amanda Vickery's programmes about the Old Bailey records have all been a good listen, but not mainly for music.

I agree the folk music input was weak but they just used the song as an example. I dont know who the singer was. Maybe someone caught the credits?,

Having seen recently a film compilation of the Peter Bellamy folk opera The Transports recorded in Portsmouth in the early 1990s I was disappointed by the musical input to this programme.

Transportation

Series 3 Episode 4 of 4

Duration: 43 minutes

First broadcast: Thursday 04 September 2014

Half a million people were transported during the 18th century - to America, the West Indies, and Australia. Historians are just beginning to track their progress from the Old Bailey to their lives beyond. What they're discovering is as dramatic and colourful as any novel.

Amanda Vickery tells the stories of three criminals who were transported during the 18th and early 19th centuries, and of one group of desperate women who refused to go, throwing the entire penal system into chaos.

Recorded on location in the Prospect of Whitby pub in Wapping, on the River Thames, near where the prisoners were kept in hulks on the river and where many were hanged.

Contributors include Professor Peter King of Leicester University, leading historian of crime; Robert Shoemaker, Professor of History at Sheffield University and the co-founder of the Old Bailey Online; and historian of Empire, Zoe Laidlaw, from Royal Holloway, University of London, herself the descendent of a transported convict who was convicted in the Old Bailey.

With readings by Charlotte Stockley, Ewan Bailey, David Holt, and Steven Webb, and specially arranged music from singer Guy Hughes and pianist David Owen Norris.

Produced by Elizabeth Burke.

A Loftus production for BBC Radio 4.
