Help: All Hands 'Round Traditional Irish Music

Anyone know about this group? Ever hear their music or attend a concert? Who are the personnel? Instrumentation? Vocals? I've never heard of them and am thinking of attending a local concert Saturday, but would like to know what to expect.

They're a new group featuring Roger Burridge on fiddle, Dave Paton on concertina (and, occasionally, hammered dulcimer), Michael Shorrock on bouzouki and guitar, with vocals by Dierdra Murtha. They have a new CD on Folk-Legacy. CLICK HERE Most of their music is Irish, with an occasional venture into Celtic music from farther afield (Britanny). Dierdra is a fine young singer who also is one of the Johnson Girls, the women's sea shanty group that often appears at South Street Seaport in New York. Liam's sister-in-law is also one of the members of that group.

Paternal modesty prevents me from offering a more glowing report. But if you go to the program, introduce yourself to Dave Paton and tell him you're a Mudcatter, sent by his old man.

If their CD is any indication of what they are like and I'm sure it is, then DEFINITELY go to that concert. You certainly won't be sorry.

Does Max have a copy of that CD to play (and plug) on the Mudcat Radio?? (See 'Wanted Irish Music for Mudcat Radio' thread)

I'd love to hear it and maybe add it to Santa's little list this year!

Okay, the concert is a definite! And, Sandy, forget the 'parental modesty' -- Dave's a wonderful, warm, and fine performer of traditional music! I've met and heard him at Mystic Seaport; you and Carolyn have done a splendid job raising him and I can imagine the joy you both must feel in knowing he is carrying the torch for this next generation. Can't wait to hear him in this new group of -- now that I know who they are -- very talented performers.

Yes, Aine, we sent the CD to Max, along with our new Ceol Anam (finger-style guitar duets by John Sherman and Carol Barney, playing neat arrangements of Irish tunes). When the radio show reappears, maybe he'll be able to "air" them. I could send more Irish material (Paddy Tunney, Peg Clancy Power, Seamus and Manus McGuire, etc.) but they're only available now on cassette, worse luck!

Deirdre Murtha is almost like family to me. Not only does she sing with my wife in The Johnson Girls but we all sing together as part of South Street Seaport Museum's sea music group, The New York Packet.

Having admitted the above, Deirdre is in my opinion easily the finest American-born singer of Irish songs. The rest of the group backs her very nicely and play tunes very well. I'm sure everyone will enjoy them in concert or on CD.

You're so right, Cindy. We're some proud of both of our traditional music-making sons. Son #2 plays fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar, sings bloody well, and has even contributed a few new songs to the mix. Son #1 has dropped a few nice, trad-sounding tunes into the pot, too. Guess we must have done something right, although no one seems to go into parenting with any knowledge of what the heck they're doing. If the result turns out to be a good one, we can thank our lucky stars, or the parents whose example we either emulated or rebelled against. In our day, Dr. Spock may have helped a little, too. He taught us to trust them.
