I have a pint and a laugh with mates.

I listen in earnest to songs

The two are not always incompatible.

Depends who your mates are.

Hello, Bert- I'm more interested in learning and singing very old songs and writing new songs than in posting.

i've been to many folk clubs and gigs where people are always keen to talk and only occasionally listen to the music

'you can only count posts here. Mudcat as far as I know does not indicate
how many times a thread is opened just to be read out of interest.'

A very good point. I often read with interest but have nothing to say or what I was about to say has already been said.
I will admit though to an occasional post mainly to keep the thread on the list for others to see.

I'm not a singer.... yet

I actually read with great interest the threads on singing and repertoire,
but don't post because I have little of value to contribute.

Maybe that's more common than realised, you can only count posts here.
Mudcat as far as I know does not indicate
how many times a thread is opened just to be read out of interest.

.... and though I do tend to be indisciplined with my half serious half impishly stupid facetious comments,
there are many threads I actually consider to be off limits out of respect.

"It seems that we are a great deal more interested in talking than singing."
Why?
Can't you do both.
Understanding a song is part of learning to sing it well.
Ho would you react f someone said - you should be talking about songs and not singing them - the first one to squal "Folk police" - no doubt.
Do you have any means of identification and a search warrant?
"i am more interested in singing, which is why i have spent little time contributing to these threads."
Which makes you the singer you are, no doubt!!

Jim Carroll

This about sums it up.

a discussion on when a new song becomes a folk song 315 messages
'what is really being sung' thread 37 messages
'you most recent ten songs' 6 messages

It seems that we are a great deal more interested in talking than singing.
