Great find, Ged Fox. It's a scan of the entire book. Not exactly the same book Joe linked to, which is titled Heart Songs - Melodies of Days Gone By and has over 500 songs, but maybe it's an abridged version of that. It's the same publisher and year, but the title is Heart Songs Dear to the American People and it has about 250 songs.

Looking at the contents of the 1915 edition, I see that a couple of the songs mentioned above are not there. These songs were added in a later edition, 1923 or earlier.

What appears to be the entire text of the 1915 Golden Book of Favorite Songs is posted at http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/aitch/songs/songs.html, but I can't even find a list of songs included in the 1909 Heart Songs - Melodies of Days Gone By.

It would be interesting to know whether Heart Songs, a collection of 500 songs published during peacetime, has the same high proportion of patriotic songs as the Golden Book, 170 songs and published in the second year of the Great War.

"The Golden Book of Favourite Songs," copyright 1915, has all 4 songs in (note that "Just a song at twilight" is titled "Love's Old Sweet Song.")

Not the Scottish Students' Song Book or the British Students' Song Book - SSSB has "A Capital Ship" but but neither book has the other three titles the other 3 titles.
Not the "school" song books Gaudeamus, the (New) National Song Book, or Folk Songs for Schools, nor the Oxford Song Book (vol 1 or 2.)

Melodies without accompaniments etc. just suggests that the book was a pupils' edition rather than a teachers' edition (assuming it was a "school" song book, rather than a "community" song book.)

Sounds like the Scottish/British Students Song Book, but I don't understand what you are describing. 'The book had tunes only'??? So no texts?

It was the same book, Bettynh. My grandmother taught school from it, then taught my mom at home from it after she had kids. I will ask Mom what the cover looked like, if that helps (and she can remember).

Google search using all the words of your four song titles but omitting "Walloping Window Blind" produces possibilities the best of which is (though its date of publication might be too late):

I'm a little confused about the request. Are you looking for the book your mom taught from in 1910? Or are you looking for the 1920s book your mother learned from? In what way was it big - large-size pages or thick?

I thought maybe the book was Heart Songs, but it has only the first two songs on your list of four, and it's not a school songbook.
Good book of songs from that era, though - and pried nice because so many copies were made.

My mother's mother was a schoolteacher in the Detroit area around 1910 or thereabouts, and among the subjects she taught in grade school was music. My mom remembers learning songs from her mom's big songbook in the 20's and 30's, including such treasures as:
- Believe me if all those endearing young charms
- When you and I were young, Maggie
- Just a song at twilight
- A capital Ship (Walloping Window-Blind)

She remembers that the book had tunes only, one line of notes rather than arrangements/accompaniments.

She would love to find a copy of that songbook -- and so would I; I have been learning many of these to please her. Before bothering y'all, I did search the threads on songbooks, but most of those are from the 50's. Anyone have an idea what this one might be?
