Our monthly shanty, forebitter and ballad session will be this Saturday, September 20th, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH.

This will be a great opportunity to warm up for the 15th annual Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival which will be the last weekend of the month, September 27th & 28th. More info here including the schedule for this year's festival --
2014 PMFF

Nick Noble on WICN in Worcester is devoting most of this Thursday's (September 18th) "The Folk Revival" show to a live session (or as close to a session as we can recreate in the studio) promoting the PMFF. The show is from 7:00 - 11:00 PM Eastern time and can be listened to online by going to --
WICN "The Folk Revival"
and click on "Listen Live Online".

Hope we see you there, both at the shanty sing and at the festival!

Linn

I'll be up for a few hours today. Thurs night on Nick's show was a lot of fun!
(I think they rebroadcast it on Sunday.)

Anyhow, see you in a few hours,

Marty

Will post it as soon as I'm at the desktop computer. Couldn't post while Max had Mudcat down for dusting and cleaning, but I keyboarded the list and will cut and paste later this morning.

Here 'tis --

The crew – me (Bat Goddess, Linn Schulz), Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Jeri, Don Hale, Susan Young, storyteller Lynne Cullen, Ernie Pigeon and Amy, Justine Donovan, Dianne Lavoie, Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane (Castlebay), Bruce MacIntyre, Barry O'Brien with Mike McGuinn and his wife, Peter Hale, Alan Eaton, Marty Stock, Ellen and Dave Hamil with friends and family in tow, Gail Diderickson and her sister Janice, and Dave Johnson. And later Jeff from Cambridge (AKA Cue or Q) joined us. And a little later Claude from Sherbrooke, Quebec, came over to say how much he and his wife were enjoying the session, how it was the highlight of their visit to Portsmouth.

Got a later start than usual while waiting for the jazz folks to get their instruments (big ones, like drum set and bass) packed up and the table area vacated, but we definitely had a quorum when we got started. Started loud and lively and kept the momentum going.

Linn, of course I, and others, read it with great interest! Re: #8, I learned this version as "All Bound To Go", from the singing of Danny Spooner. Re: #23, Justine was ably assisted by Susan in a duet. Re: #54, I think this was originally named "Rolling And Flowing". I once found some comments about same at dillonbustin.com, but the link no longer works. It's a nice song, whatever it's called. Looking forward to this coming weekend!

Linn, I read the thread every month. I don't comment because it's hard to not say how bitterly I miss such gatherings; just another "No, you can't" for me.

You do a great job with this and other music traditions. Thank you.

Maeve

Linn-

You've done a great job of keeping track of the singers and their songs, not to mention making people feel welcome. How you do all that?

Thank you, all. I take my responsibilities in continuing Tom's promotion of traditional music very seriously. It's nice to be reassured when I'm doing things right. I have a lot to live up to.

Hi Linn,

A bit late, but just noticed that the title of number 57 in the list above is in need of correcting. The name of the song is "The Deepwaterman." I found it on Bob Walser's CD "When Our Ship Comes Home". Bob says, in the CD notes, that he found it in a collection by Joseph McGinnis from the 1920's, and hasn't seen it elsewhere. Bob's CD is really good; I have picked several favorites off it so far ... I think I may have done as many as 5 at our past gatherings in Portsmouth ... and there are more waiting for me to pay them closer attention.

Hope to be up there for the October session.

Ernie
