Ron has just passed on.
he gave me a lot of encouragement, I have his song book which he signed for me, his praise and comments on the fly leaf of the book, have helped to keep me going through many barren periods on the uk folk scene, thankyou Ron, for all the times you booked me at Stockton folk club for all your help and encouragement. R I P my friend. Dick Miles

Oh no - what sad news. I realise Ron had been very ill for some time, but this is a shock nevertheless.
Only a couple of days ago I was at "his" fine club at The Sun, Stockton, for Trevor Lister's party, and fond memories of great nights spent in that room during Ron's "presidency" were flooding back during the evening. Dick is absolutely right to focus on Ron as a source of much encouragement. He really was one of the good guys, and an inspiration to all on the scene and beyond - not least as a fine singer, songwriter, musician and teacher. I shall never forget the genuine welcome and encouragement I got on my very first visit to the club, and on every subsequent visit since. Thanks Ron - and RIP, friend.

Another good man gone. Loved his Chemical Workers Song. Haven't heard it for years though. Let's hope for a revival. I first met Ron at Paul Sirman's wedding. He led us up to the church playing his whistle. It made the steep climb up that hill in Lancaster so much easier. I also had the priveledge of his staying overnight en route home, and he is one of the signatures in my visitor's book. A lovely man.

We go back almost 50 years .
A King-pin in world of folk music in ths part of the world along with Graeme Miles the Fettlers ,Vin , Wilsons and countless writers and performers and many many others.
Some have already said how he was supportive of their music - he loved all music when honestly presented and performed. A great whistle and flute player , fine songwriter and singer. His encouragement was to all - alike - and was an inspiration as was his love and energy for Folk music performance, projects and his Folk Club.
A very lovely kind man shall be sorely missed.

R.I.P.Ron.

Betsy

I am deeply saddened by this news. I sang at Stockton folk club many times and enjoyed every occasion, largely due to Ron's influence. For many years he was the life force in that club with his singing, whistle playing, and encouragement for every would-be singer and player. I was proud to be counted among his friends, and the news of his death clouds a sunny day. The folk scene is all the poorer for the loss of invaluable people such as Ron.
Goodbye old pal. Thanks for the memories. Rest in Peace. My sympathies to his family.

I knew the frost had blighted, and it would not be long before the wind came and shook. But it was still a shock.

Ron was the rock on which The Sun stood for much longer than the 20-odd years I was there.

One of nature's gentlemen, but he also had a mean streak of humour. I recall his accompanying my broomstick dance on his fife and realizing half way through that his playing was getting subtly but irrevocably faster and faster.

It's time to go now.

I can only reiterate what our Mike has posted earlier and everyone else's fond memories of a man whose influence on ourselves & so many others cannot be over stressed.

Like Betsy, we go back a long, long time with Ron to our 'raw' beginnings in the early '70's. He encouraged us when others were, maybe, more circumspect, he was a friend, a mentor and an inspiration but, above all, he was a genuinely kind, warm and generous person whose passing, like that of his good friend Graeme Miles, is a major loss to all who were lucky enough to have known him

Our sincere condolences to his family. - Tom Wilson

It's heartening to see tributes coming in for Ron.He is very much missed on Teesside and in particular at Stockton Folk Club. I've just heard from his daughter that the funeral will be at Teesside Crematorium (St Bede's chapel)on Monday 29th September at 10:10 a.m. The crem. is on Acklam Road, Middlesbrough TS5 7HD. I don't know yet what is happening afterwards.
Ron had been admitted to hospital recently with pneumonia and other complications. He appeared to pull through and had a good day chatting with the members of his family. He was discharged soon after to a nursing home but sadly went into decline and died on Wed. afternoon (17th). He was 83.
Farewell old friend.

A fine singer, whistle player and song-writer, who encouraged all and had a huge influence over many performers. The Sun will always be Ron's club, in my mind.

A loss to folk.

Ron was a lovely man and has to take the blame for encouraging me to sing, without my knees shaking! Over the years singing has given me a lot of pleasure and I have loads of great memories of Ron at the Sun and many local folk events. He hasn't been able to join us at the club for a good while but is still missed and remembered. Hope you're still singing and playing where ever you are now Ron..... Carol

Just as a matter of protocol, call it what you will, but don't call me pedantic please. I asked Joe Offer in a PM to change the thread's Subject line to Capitals.
Ron deserves THAT at the very least !!
( Maybe Joe is on holiday or some such and can't respond / do so - as I'm sure he would

While many folks have been involved with the Stockton Folk Club at The Sun and former venues Ron was a big part of it all.
A history of the club with many a mention of Ron can be seen at http://www.stocktonfolk.org.uk/Images/50%20years.pdf

We now know that the reception after Ron's funeral at the crematorium will be at
Dorman's Club*
Oxford Road
Linthorpe
Middlesbrough
TS5 5DT
This will be an opportunity to share some stories about Ron, to sing some songs and play some tunes and to meet some old friends and Ron's family who are keen for folkies to be involved in this event.

The service at the crematorium is fairly early for anyone travelling from outside the area: if you can't make it , you'll still be welcome at the gathering afterwards. If you can't make it to either, Ron's folk club at the Sun Inn in Stockton will be dedicating the singaround that evening to Ron's memory and all are welcome to join us.

* Dorman's Club appears on some maps as Dorman Long Athletic Club – be assured we're not planning anything strenuous

Although I've never had the pleasure of being involved with the Stockton Club,I've always loved Ron's Chemical Workers' song which we were singing only last Monday. It's been with me from way back in my teens. My thoughts are with his family and his memory.

I first met Ron in the early 70s, when I started going to the Stockton Folk Club. He used to sing with the Fettlers there. I eventually moved out of the area and only started returning there a few years ago. I was learning storytelling and Ron was very encouraging. The funeral service today was touching and there was some good singing afterwards at the Dorman's Club.   RIP Ron.

Unable to attend the funeral today, but great memories of Ron. His directions to find the 'Sun' were simple- just find the 'Northern Goldsmiths' and you're there! I've done the 'Sun' several times on my own, but in more distant times, I recall the ceili nights we did as the Marsden Rattlers for Ron & the lads we did at the Kirklevington Country Club on several Friday nights in the mid/late sixties.
Memorable nights these with Ron to the fore, and great fun- we didn't know much about ceili/folk dancing but the folks certainly enjoyed themselves at those nights- our fiddler was a devout RC & used t look on longingly at us all scoffing the excellent burgers until a minute past midnight, when he joined in!
RIP Ron

Great send off - and Ron would have been loved hearing the Wilsons singing "What's the life of a man" with the backing of the congregation who were also in fine voice ,in joining in to a recording of Ron singing the Chemical Worker's song.

Many Thanks again Ron.

On behalf of my Dad's family, I want to thank you all for all the incredibly kind and 'true' words spoken about my rock. He was always there for me, and I'm sure I would not appreciate music of any kind half as much if it wasn't for the daily music lessons we all got as children. I read your comments daily to help get through this very sad time. Nite nite Dad. xx
