Yes, after 40 something years, I will be going afloat in something bigger than a narrowboat or a ferry ; today we leave for Bristol, where we embark in MS Discovery for a trip up the English Channel via Falmouth ,Honfleur,Antwerpen , and Amsterdam . And the WX forecast is good ! Will try and post from the ship's "internet cafe ".Wish me / us luck ( it is a very old ship; one of the "Loveboat" stars !).

Have a great time and keep in touch. You got an honourable mention at the Happenstance practice last week and they are all looking forward to seeing you. Give my regards to Seaman Staines and Master Bates.

.....going afloat in something bigger than a narrowboat or a ferry.

Just for comparison, the MV Discovery is 20186 GT. The Pride of Rotterdam (North Sea Ferry from Hull), at 59925 GT, is almost 3 times the size. Still, they say that small is beautiful.

I spent 10 nights on the MV Discovery in March this year, circumnavigating Great Britain, from Hull to Hull. Great food, great entertainment and an altogether enjoyable experience.

Hope you have a great trip.

DC

"the (real?) character - Roger the Cabinboy"

Popular myth too: it was Tom the cabin boy

Hi all ! Just managed to get on the internet via Discovery satellite ! Left Bristol on Sunday PM after tight squeeze in sea-lock at Avonmouth.Arrived Falmouth early Monday (picked up pilot at 0400 ) and had a great day there. Left at 1600 and arrived this morning 0800 Honfleur . German tourists everywhere and everything very expensive ! .Departed Honfleur1400 and now en route Antwerpen ETA 0900 Wednesday . Looking forward to speaking Flemish again!Ijmuiden (for Amsterdam ) looms on Thursday. Weather hot ,sunny, and LOVELY !!

well, here we are on Fiday, out in the Channel and heading for Bristol.WX not so good any more ; cloudy, poor vis and some swell. Also had itinerary probs too;Antwerpen was lovely, BUT a bigger ship pinched our Amsterdam berth and we had to stop in IJmouden, which is some KMs from Amsterdam ! JUST ENOUGH TIME 2-3 hours FOR A QUICK BOAT TRIP On the canals before long coach-ride back to rather dull Ijmouden.Lots of "duty free" to drink ,though.
