Does your scope include all of Long Island Sound? You might look in some of the New England collections for songs collected on the CT coast. For example, the Flanders collection includes 8 songs collected from Capt. Christopher Culver of New London, including "Old Hoss, Old Hoss" (collected in May 1949 when Culver was 81) which was published in Flanders and Olney "Ballads Migrant in New England."

Becky provided the most important insights into what was going on, but one of my messages towards the end of the thread gives you another ten tunes relating to the same events. I can't think of any other battle that inspired so much topical music.

just a reminder for non- New Yorkers... 2 of the five boroughs of NYC are actually the western two counties of Long Island. Kings (aka Brooklyn) and Queens counties. Also Richmond (aka Staten Island... but not the one named in the hornpipe); New York county (aka Manhatten; and finally the Bronx... the only one on the mainland and has the same name as the county.

BTW... Long island, though completely surrounded by water and connected only by bridges to the mainland is legally defined as a pennisula. This the same ones who define whales as fishes... reality as seen through the eyes of lawyers and politicians...

You might use Major André, around the Hudson Valley.
There's also been some work done at the University of Maine which may cover the area.

the Long Islander, Robert Cushman Murphy, a naturalist wrote Logbook for Grace... based on his voyage on the whaling brig, Daisy. It includes a reference to Sally Brown, Whiskey Johnny and Blow the Man Down being sung by the crew during the cutting in of a captured whale.

Susan Sanfillippo worked for Suffolk County - historical society(?).. she and Steve went through many archives... they would know what was found.

As many at Mystic Seaport know... it's a long slog through musty records to find the occassional gem.

Steve Mercer with the NYS State Museum might also be a resource... he's gone through a number of diaries from the War of 1812. Send a query to their website & see what pops up.

I'm surprised that Gibb Sahib hasn't seen this thread yet.

I'm just thinking there's something in the Dutch repertoire from way back when the UK bought NY itself from them. Something tells me there's a Dutch tune from that period - but what and where...nope.
You could stretch matters and have New York Girls, of course...

I'm really only interested in older songs for what I'm doing. There are plenty of great current and recent songs (including a couple I've written myself!), but for this purpose, only public domain.

mg: I can't find that song. Is it possible you are thinking of the Rock Island Line?

You may have difficulty with the PD. Let's start without and work from there.

Firstly, you have Billy Joel, raised in Hicksville, has lived almost all of his life along the coast. His Downeaster Alexa refers to his fishing boat, and the fishermen of Oyster Bay.
Then I'd bet there's a thing or two of Cole Porter's written in that area.

Cold Spring Harbor, Ammagansett and Sag Harbor all had stron ties to the whaling trade, so many shanties were sung aboard their ships & some documented in old logs and journals.
