Hi, A friend of mine called me and is looking for a songbook (hymnal)
of "white" gospel music. Not too sure what he means by white gospel music but he lives deep in the hills of West Virginia so maybe there is a difference. Anyways, he's housebound and is reaching out to me. So I'm reaching out to you good people. I've done some searches but not really coming up with much. Maybe you can help point me in a direction, i.e. website lol.

Thank you,
Tom

Would be good to know what he means. WV is as diverse as any other place regarding churches and music, so being from WV does give an idea.

If he is talking about lined-out singing, such as is done by Old Regular and United Baptists, the books they use most often are Sweet Songster, The Baptist Hymnal, the New Baptist Hymnal, and the Thomas Hymnal.

If he is talking about shaped note singing, whether Sacred Harp or Aiken, there are many. Google shaped note.

If he is talking about traditional hymns done in a bluegrass or old-time style, (some of which have their origins in African-American spirituals, some from across the pond, and some written in the 19th and 20th century by American writers of hymns, there is The Bluegrass Gospel Songbook, Hymns of the Old Camp Ground, or America's 101 Favorite Old Time Gospel Songs, to name a few.

If he is talking about modern "praise music" such as is often sung at the early service in many churches these days with a band, can't offer any suggestions there.

If you are a member, you may want to send Joe Offer a pm. He has an extensive collection and is very knowledgeable about religious folk music.

Tom, I'd be pleased to send your friend some of the singalong books I've produced for our band. If you will please join Mudcat (free and spamless), we can explore more about what he'd like.

Hmmm. I wonder if your friend would like the five-volume Country & Western Gospel Hymnal - there's also a "best of" book if 5 books is too many.
There's a folkie gospel book called Gospel Singer's Wordbook, but it's hard to find.
Holler if you need something more specific.
For that matter, I really rely on a book called Heavenly Highway Hymns, which has a good selection of the old-time hymns.

Sankey & Moody (spelling)
I can't lay my hands on the book right now but it is full of religious songs. Some by Rev Billy Sunday. My mother & Aun't reckoned they saw him when he was in Allegheny County 1910-1917 ish.

Thanks folks. Yeah, I don't really know what he means.
He may not either lol. I'll send him these links and
he can decide what he likes I guess.
Thanks for the info!

I used to be a member but fell off the radar
for awhile. Tom

I have a book called "Sacred Songs and Solos", compiled by Ira D Sankey. It was very popular in early 20th century - my grandmother used to play these songs at the City Mission (for the homeless and hungry) in Launceston, Tasmania (Oz). The copy I have was a gift from RichJoy. It is no music, and you may need one with music, depending on what your friend wants.

Regards,
Shimbo

Meant to say "does not" but it seems you got my drift 'anywho.' Hope and expect all or some of our posts are helpful.

I guarantee that you can't go wrong with Heavenly Highway Hymns - and at $8.99 for hardcover, the price is right.
