I interviewed Jack for the BBC about 5yrs ago. Top Bloke, and an excellent Bass Player. I will do something for Radio Lancashire on Jack in the next couple of weeks

What a great loss, an amazing bass player and musician. I saw Cream live at the old Top Rank in Brighton back in 1967 and my ears are still ringing from that show.

When I heard of Jack's death I thought of Tolkien's letter to his daughter about the death of C S Lewis.

Besides the great contribution to Cream, the solo albums are excellent, I have played Consul at Sunset in acoustic sessions and Harmony Row is a terrific and inventive collection, even a track called Folk Song!

Farewell to a musical legend; I first saw Jack with Graham Bond back in 1965 and I have followed his career ever since. His appearance in Nottingham in 1987 with Dick Heckstall - Smith and the Norman Beaker Band remains the greatest gig I have ever seen. Strangely enough I had been playing "Songs for a Tailor" in the car all last week – what an album! RIP Jack.

Not so odd when you consider their line of work.

I remember the exact moment when I first heard Crossroads and it knocked me on my ass. I was as much taken by the bass playing and trio interplay as Clapton's killer guitar. A great talent was that man.

Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), John Entwhistle (Who) and Jack Bruce (Cream) were all highly-trained musicians and could play other instruments.

Phil Lesh is actually an Avant-garde composer.

Like Paul McCartney, they probably decided to buck-up and do bass because nobody else wanted to.

They all amused themselves by inventing counter melodies and lead improviation, not just rhythm bass.

There have been louder and more raucus bass players in Rock Music, but none better than those three.

Odd, but Phil Lesh, like Jack Bruce, also received a liver transplant.

When Cream were on Saturday Club or maybe the John Peel programme, my tape recorder would be left on record/pause with my finger ready to release it when they were announced, because tape was too expensive to record the whole show - unlike today when the full show is recorded direct to PC then edited down!
