I bought a new washing machine. When wash8ibg is finished, it tinkles.

The tune goes:

dum diddley ee dum dum/ dum dee dum dee dum dee dum dum/ dum diddley dum dum diddley diddley dee

I almost think I recognize the tune, but I can't put my finger on it.

HELP if you can befoe I go nuts.

My washing machine has a tinkle on the kitchen floor every now and then. Not every time I use it.

Sounds like the Yetties' arrangement of Barwick Green. Merged with Don't Like Mondays. Help, an expression of self-awareness in our automata! Can the Belgian takeover of the world be far behind?*

*Explanatory Note: The Belgian State Telecoms ISP sails under then name of Skynet - and the way they behave, it's entirely conceivable their computers may have it on the agenda to exterminate common humanity.

I wouldn't mind so much if it served me Belgian beer...it's probably a Walloon folk song.

Probably a SMEG machine playing "It's cold out there, no lind of atmosphere." Strange how the conversation goes from catspee to Belgian beer...

Some beer IS cat pee.

I'll ask Samsung. They made it, they should know. It's probably their trade jingle.

I googled "Tune played by Samsung washing machine at end of cycle" & found link to -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRyWu7QcTCw

- whence you will find that the tune is the beginning of Schubert's Die Forelle (The Trout), and used as the final movement theme of his Trout Quintet.

"Schubert chose to set the text of a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, first published in the Schwäbischer Musenalmanach in 1783. The full poem tells the story of a trout being caught by a fisherman, but in its final stanza reveals its purpose as a moral piece warning young women to guard against young men. When Schubert set the poem to music, he removed the last verse, which contained the moral, changing the song's focus and enabling it to be sung by male or female singers." Wikipedia

So there y'are. Ain't Google wonderful!

But is Rap's machine a Samsung?

Rap, I played your tune in my mind, and I believe it's "Campbell's Farewell to Red Gap." It's in the Fiddler's Fakebook.

Yes it is, Leeneia -- he said so a few posts back, 11.19 AM. That's when I googled.

You are not paying attention, I fear. Go & stand in the corner for 10 minutes!

Well, it does match the rhythmn.
But if you can program it like your dial tone, what would your end of cycle melody be?

Don't know why you are all being so awkward. If you will make the link in my post of 1131 AM, you will find the definitive answer, So stop arguing, with idiotic suggestions like the Archers...

Or you will all stay in & write out the score of Die Forelle 100 times!

Kind of mean of them, every time someone's old woman goes to do the wash she'll know the machine's got her sussed...after all, they could have made it the female equivalent, "some time my Prince will come"...

Rapparee -- You put me in mind of the great euphemism in Measure For Measure, where the fornicator is under sentence of death, as Pompey the clown puts it, for "Groping for trouts in a peculiar river".

In the rain outside of an Irish pub sat an old man fishing in a puddle.

Seeing the old man fishing in a puddle a young man heading to the pub took pity and invited the auld one inside for pint. His offer was accepted and the stick and string were carefully put up.

"So tell me, auld fella, how many fish have you caught today?" asked the young man.

"You're the eighth."

Your posting turned into a wretched curse for me.

Hear
..now have at it....the words are now stricken to your mind.

Torn Between Two Lovers is the title of a pop song written by Peter Yarrow (of the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and Phillip Jarrell. It was inspired by Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, Doctor Zhivago.
This "ear worm" (a term gathered from Mudcat) has been driving me nuts for a week. It was activated by this thread and background music in a grocery store a week ago.

CHORUS

[Chorus:]
Torn between two lovers, feelin' like a fool
Lovin' both of you is breakin' all the rules
Torn between two lovers, feelin' like a fool
Lovin' you both is breakin' all the rules

FIRST STANZA

There are times when a woman has to say what's on her mind
Even though she knows how much it's gonna hurt
Before I say another word let me tell you, I love you
Let me hold you close and say these words as gently as I can

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

THERE it now belongs to you.
May it curse you, also, for the days and days on end.
