Sometimes the request is okay, but the follow-up is a bit goofy.

So it's 1959 or so and I'm singing regularly three evenings a week in one of Seattle's nicer coffeehouses. This guy asks me to sing "The Sloop John B."

So I sing it.

He looks unhappy and mutters, "That's not how the Kingston Trio does it!"

I learned the song early on, probably before the guys in the Kingston Trio even met—and I learned it from Carl Sandberg's "The American Songbag," published 1937.

Can't please everybody, I guess….

The phenomenon was well summarised in Red Ingle's fine old "Cigareets and Whuskey", with the drunk who wants to hear 'Temptation' rather than evangelical denunciations of 'alcohole & terbakky and the tim-tay-shuns of Eve'.

In a pub or a bar someone might well ask 'Can you play something we know?'
In a Folk Club the audience are hoping to hear something they don't know.

If it's something I know, I'll probably play it. I don't that many well known songs. I was playing a rare bar gig in my younger days. A bachelor party type outing occurred right in front near the stage. About a dozen guys were drinking a lot and passing out "novelty" gifts to the future groom. The future groom asked me if I knew any Simon & Garfunkle. I said, sorry I didn't know any. About every twenty minutes thereafter, he would say, is he gonna play any Simon & Garfunkle or what? After about the fifth repeat of that comment, I said I don't know any f---ing Simon & Garfunkle, if I did I would have played it long ago. That's why I probably didn't do too many solo bar gigs.

St Patrick's Day pub session a few years ago - early evening and we'd been playing since soon after lunch. A drunk came up to me and asked "Can you play any of that Irish jam stuff?".
I replied "we've been playing it for the last six hours."
"Oh. Well can you play any of that American jam stuff?"

Also, this is a very musical thread, not bs at all.

I always want to make requests and then don't because I figure you performers know what you want to play and what you like to play and what you think you'd play well...

The exception is if I'm traveling, for some reason, somewhere where I might not get to come back to, then I will ask.

In Ireland as we were going from Galway to Dublin we asked for the Rocky Road to Dublin, which the Ragamuffins sang in Dublin itself, but mostly what we wanted was stuff too old-fashioned for them, which is why I don't usually make requests also.

Billy Connolly tells of when Mario Lanza was playing The Glasgow Empire, and a drunken heckler kept shouting "Sing "Softly Softly" it's my Mum's favourite." After lots of "I don't know that one" and getting impatient with the heckler, he apologised to the audience and said "I DO NOT KNOW SUCH A SONG. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

The bloke shouted "Well show us your cock then."

So there we are in a pub amusing ourselves by playing Playford tunes from the seventeenth century and someone asks us for a modern song that we may or may not have heard and certainly can't play. Then they sing it to us as if that would suddenly transfer it to our fingers.

I understand that Bing Crosby used to tell of a guy who came up to him while he was doing a cabaret spot and asked bing to sing "The One We used to Know".
Crosby said he didn't know such a song, but the guy persisted and eventually he asked him how it went. The guy said " You must know it - it goes,,,I'm dreaming of a white christmas, just like the One We Used To Know"

I was playing a bar gig in Eureka Montana. There were a bunch of Canadians who had snuck across the border to drink. And they kept coming up to the bandstand and asking for THE RODEO SONG. When I told each and every one of them that I didn't know it, they would start chanting "I get in my truck and I don't give a fuck "cause I'm off to the rodeo.", as if I was a telepath who could immediately respond with the rest of the song. After umpteen requests I started singing THE CASTRATION OF THE STRAWBERRY ROAN. I did not hear a peep out of them for the rest of the evening.

Or the old story of the Glasgow drunk who asked Stevie Wonder at a concert to play a jazz chord. after several futile attempts by Stevie, the heckler is invited on the stage to try and do it himself.
He gets on the stage and starts singing "A jazz chord to say I love you...."

Sorry I can't remember the name of the Irish singer who told this story. He was asked to sing "the one about the girl with the hairy tongue". Of course, he had no idea what the man was talking about. Turned out, it was Black Velvet Band: "And her hairy tongue over her shoulder/Tied up in a black velvet band."

In Scotland, a particular and common request has been adopted as a satirical putdown of a certain type of audience, and even perhaps a certain type of musician:

"Hey, Jimmy.......... gie us 'Ten Guitars' ! "

La little latter , we were 'doing' a set of 4/4 tunes when she shouted "That's the one !" when we launched into the third March tune of the set . A VERY Odd Waltz !

Not long after the Berlin wall came tumbling down I did a gig in Leipzig. It was a bit like "Auf wiedersehen, pet" with gangs of Irish brickies all over the place. One of these Paddies, pissed out of his head, swayed up to me and said,"Shing the Wild Rover!" I'd actually just sung it, but a Sussex version rather then THAT one. If only to get his dreadfully alcoholic breath out of my face I sang it, not only that, I sang it straight!(I have been known to do THAT version of it as "The Wild Rover Rap" with tambourine backing!)

Sometimes when I play in nursing homes or assisted living facilities—one voice, one acoustic guitar—I get requests for things like "The Blue Danube Waltz" or other such that is written for an orchestra, or something else that's more an ensemble instrumental piece than a "song."
Never quite sure what those folks want me to do by way of "playing" such pieces.

But it's the guess-what-song-I'm-thinking-of type requests that really make me sigh.
E.g., someone will ask for "a Kenny Rogers song" and I'll oblige by doing "The Gambler,"
after which the requester will say,
"No, that's not it."

You can't walk into any musical event in Scotland carrying a saxophone without somebody asking for the intro to whatever Gerry Rafferty song started with a sax solo. I usually reply along the lines that I'd be delighted to oblige but then somebody might start singing the goddam song afterwards.

Doesn't anybody make "Gerry Rafferty Was Shite" t-shirts?

The fellow who played that sax solo, Raphael Ravenscroft, died a couple of weeks ago (19 October 2014). I heard that it was intended for another instrument, but the guy who played the other instrument wasn't there at the time, so Ravenscroft did it on the sax, and they kept it in. Maybe so, maybe an urban legend.

I am not a singer/musician but when I do go to concerts, I sometime cringe when I hear people shouting out requests.

It reminds me of a song that the late Ricky Nelson wrote called
"Garden Party"
There's lines in the song that says,
"But it's alright now. I learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself."

So when musicians get all these people shouting out requests that you don't know or don't want to play even if you do know the song - just think of the words that Ricky Nelson wrote years ago.
