Bill Morris gave a workshop on the song Davy Lowston at the Wellington Folk Festival last weekend and at the end he played this video. Last year, while he was researching the song, he visited Neil Colquhoun who played it for him.
This is what Bill has posted:
I was saddened to hear via this forum of Neil Colquhoun's passing. I feel very lucky and privileged to have met and interviewed him last year and to meet the lovely Barbie. Although the effects of his stroke were obvious, his wit, passion and joie de vivre were very much intact and with my camera I was able to capture the infectious sparkle in his eye as he talked about recording Davy Lowston with the Song Spinners and presenting it to the public for the first time in Auckland. Here's the clip I filmed of Neil playing Davy Lowston on his piano, which I showed at the end of my discussion about the song at the Wellington folk festival.

I sing "Bright Fine Gold" - remember it in a book in Wellington Folk Club Library, it listed Neil as setting a poem he collected to music.

He sounds like quite a guy! Thanks for the research link Robyn. That was very revealing. My condolences to all who knew him and love him.

RIP

This has just been reported to New Zealand Folk:

Neil Colquhoun died last night 29th October. Neil was one of New Zealand's earliest and finest folklorists. A fine singer, musician, songwriter, composer, artist, teacher – generally a great guy. Always ready to lend a helping hand to fellow singers and musicians. He has left behind a wonderful legacy and will be sadly missed by all New Zealanders interested in our music.

Rudy Sunde.

No further details yet but there is an interesting article about Neil here:

and if you put his name in the search engine here you'll find other threads that mention Neil.
