Subject: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 04 Nov 14 - 12:05 PM I'm announcing this a bit early because I hope it will be a special singaround. Our November Press Room Shanty and Forebitter session at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH USA will be on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 3:30-7:30. This will be the day after the first anniversary of Curmudgeon/Tom Hall's death and we decided at last month's sing for it to be designated the Tom Hall Memorial Sing. Please come help me celebrate Tom's founding and contribution to this session (as well as to the Friday trad session). Linn |

Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 07 Nov 14 - 10:56 AM Hey, group! Please make a comment so I know you've seen this AND that the thread doesn't drop off the bottom. My computer is still in the shop. The computer was terminal, but the hard drive is fine, so today I take in the computer I bought last February to transfer all the data from the old one so I'll be in business again. Linn |

Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Nov 14 - 07:12 AM I had a complicated day Sunday...after a complicated several weeks. Sunday was particularly weepy in short spurts. OF COURSE, the ultimate trigger is the lead up to the "last of the firsts"...the first anniversary of Tom's death. I've gotten through all the other "firsts". Probably the most difficult one was MY birthday, the first in 34 years without him. I made it through the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival because I was too busy not to. A part of me wanted to be far away...but the realistic part of me knew I HAD to be there. And not just because I was president of the board, a performer, and leading the afternoon's music at Book & Bar. For Tom's birthday a couple days later, I just didn't want to be at home, so, after a ferry cruise around the islands in Casco Bay, I headed to Brunswick, Maine, and re-explored coves and back roads and old cemeteries that Tom and I first discovered 16 years ago. Even ate at the same restaurant, Bombay Mahal. But also explored some new places and new views and enjoyed dipping back into the coastal Maine experience. Really needed those two days off alone with Tom... The complicatedness of the present is also influenced by the rainy weather, the temperature drop, and the fact it's definitely Fall and winter is coming. I'm probably looking forward to the holidays less than I was last year. But again this year -- and this is very important to me -- on Friday, the anniversary of Tom's death, I will be surrounded by friends and music at the weekly Press Room trad session, and Saturday I will be surrounded by friends and music at the Press Room sea music sing. Tom founded the sessions. Please come and help me keep Tom's music, memory, and legacy alive. Linn |

Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: GUEST,Jim Date: 13 Nov 14 - 01:41 PM Hello, I will be in Portsmouth tomorrow to Monday and would like to check out the tunes. What time Friday is the session? I see on PHs website, there's a band from 9 to close. We should be by for the Memorial session too (a nice idea). Jim in Nova Scotia |
Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Jeri Date: 13 Nov 14 - 01:47 PM The Friday sessions (both songs and tunes) start sometime after 4 PM when a critical mass of musicians shows up. |
Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Nov 14 - 02:50 PM Hey, Jim! The Friday session starts about 4:30 or so...depends on when we get a quorum. It runs until 9:00 unless The Press Room has music starting early upstairs. (It happens, but not that often.) The Saturday sea music sing technically starts at 3:30, but sometimes it takes the jazz people from the lunch time session a few minutes longer to pack up. Looking forward to meeting you and having you join us! There are a few others coming Saturday who don't usually check in here. Alison Lee Freeman is coming down from mid-coast Maine and I've heard from some Massachusetts people as well as some of the semi-usual suspects. Linn |
Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Jeri Date: 13 Nov 14 - 09:38 PM I hope to get to Friday night AND Saturday, but the guy's coming to do the annual cleaning & maintenance on my furnace tomorrow... sometime tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Nov 14 - 09:44 AM The best part was the young fellow I met when I was leaving. He was SO excited about the music and had enjoyed the afternoon so much. His dad had known Jay Smith and I filled him in about Tom and the sessions. He'd pushed a wad of dollar bills into my hand because he couldn't find our (non-existent) tip jar. I suggested he get Tom's CD "A Bottle Full For The Shantyman" which I conveniently had in the car. Got him one. He said those dollar bills were the last of his cash, and I pointed out my address and other contact info was on a card inside. I hope he emails me as well...and I hope he comes back. His enthusiasm is what Tom was trying to encourage in introducing new people to the music. I'll get a start on posting the crew and the songs probably sometime today. It may take a bit longer as I'm on an iPad; my computer is in the shop. Linn |
Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: maeve Date: 17 Nov 14 - 12:05 PM I'm so glad, Linn. If I can't join you, at least I know others are loving the music. |
Subject: RE: Nov. Press Room Shanty Sing - Tom Hall From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Nov 14 - 02:08 PM It's going to take longer, also, to post the crew and songs because I have to leave in 45 minutes to go to a funeral. Linn |
