I'd appreciate your opinion of this new steamboat song I've composed. Here's a link to the "Natchez and Delta Queen Race" with lyrics and a MP3 sample of how I sing it: For a good time click here!

Hmmm? No interest or is it a case of other interests?

Hi, Charlie -

I like the song. It reminds me of stories I've read of steamboat races on the Sacramento River. One of the best-known races ended with a boiler explosion on one of the ships. The Delta Queen, you know, is a Sacramento riverboat. Her parts were ordered from a shipyard in Scotland in 1924, and she was shipped to the Sacramento River Delta and assembled in 1926. During WWII, she was painted grey and served on the Sacramento River as a troop ship. We believe she was kidnapped in 1946, tarted up with a front-end gangplank, and placed in servitude on the Mississippi River. Her sister ship, the Delta King is an engineless restaurant-hotel moored at Sacramento. Th eQueen ceased operation at the end of the 2008 season, and is slated to become a boutique hotel in Chattanooga - engineless, no doubt.

But despite the fact that she is a tarted-up kidnapping victim, the song is good.

Oh, and Wikipedia says the Natchez was built in 1975. So much for authenticity in Mississippi riverboats...

Thanks, Joe!

Yes, the current Natchez, the 9th, was built in 1975 but she does have real steam engines and has never been beat in competition.

There is still a Delta Queen in New Orleans which lost her Coast Guard license to cruise a few years ago but there are continued efforts to bring her up to code and get her cruising again.

When my wife and I got a chance to revisit New Orleans this year we booked the evening cruise on the Natchez and enjoyed an excellent dinner, the old time jazz music, and exploring the boat from the engine room to the top deck. I highly recommend it.

We did sleep and dine aboard the Delta King in Sacramento when we were out there in 2013. Be nice if they were able to get her cruising again.

Cheerily,
Charlie

Once, back around 1970, we videotaped the Delta Queen when she was tied up in Hannibal. I'm certain the reel-to-reel videotape is long gone.

I'm not at all sure the USCG would permit such a race these days, but it makes for a good song.
