I'm proofreading songs for the soon-to-come Rise Again Songbook. One of the songs is the haunting "The Mountain," by Dave Carter. Here's what I hear, but I'm having trouble with parts. Can somebody offer corrections?

THE MOUNTAIN
(Dave Carter)

I was born in a fork-tongued (forked-tongued??) story,
Raised up by merchants and drugstore liars;
Now I walk on the paths of glory,
One foot in ice, one in fire.

CHORUS
I see the mountain, the mountain comes (come?) to me;
I see the mountain, and that is all I see

Some poor prophet comes, some find solace,
Some lay him down in a junkyard bay;
Some will chase us AND some will call us,
Gone, gone, gone in a day.
Gone to the mtn...

Miller take me and miller grind me,
Scatter my bones on the wild, green tide;
Maybe some roving bird will find me,
And over the water we'll ride
Over the mtn...

Some build temples and some find altars,
And some come in tall hats and robes spun fine;
Some in rags, some in gemstone halters
And some push the pegs back in line
I see the mtn...

Hi Joe,

   For the same service as mentioned in Tanglewood Tree, we also did The Mountain. The words are pretty much what we have, I think Susan got the words off the CD lyrics here. "forked-tongued" is what we have in line one. I'm pretty sure on the chorus that the Dave and Tracy version they sing "come." They do that on the recording and on a live cd we'd heard from a festival set. Tracy sings "comes" when she does the song herself these days.

Again, I hope that helps.

It's recorded on Tanglewood Tree. There are lyrics to Dave & Tracy's CDs at Tracy's website, and this one is here.

You say "(forked-tongued??)"--my interpretation of that is that snakes have forked tongues and everybody knows about listening to things snakes tell you.

I think she's saying she was born in some kind of Ford.

I take the phrase to mean speaking with a forked-tongue. Being purposely misled.

It sounds like "come" to me, too. Singing all those consonant sounds together--"mst"--is a workout. Richard Shindell also recorded the song on "Not Far Now".

I hadn't paid much attention to Dave Carter songs other than "Gentle Arms of Eden" (which I may be asking about later today, because it's in the next chapter). I really like "the Mountain" and "Tanglewood Tree."

And I hadn't known the story of Dave Carter and his transgender identity. I was moved by Dave's songs, and by his story.

Susan and I love Dave Carter's songs. We have worked up two UU services from his work.
