Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,Justin Date: 29 Nov 14 - 04:01 PM Thank you everybody, especially Leeneia for posting the midi tune and GUEST for chording it out - fantastic! I am really happy about this as I have been playing a improvised tune of my own and now at last I can give this lovely song it's rightful place and serve Charles Dibdin some justice! Now to settle down with my guitar and practice. Again, many many thanks my hearties! |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Nov 14 - 10:00 AM Thanks, Joe. If I were doing this song for people, I would folk-process this line: "For she married six husbands and buried them all" right out of the song. The song has a happy tune, and it's about how nifty Meg of Wapping is. Keeping with that theme, I like it this way: "She'd shine at the play, and she'd jig at the ball All rigged out so gay and so topping; With ribbons and laces and roses and all Pull away, pull away, I say; What d'ye think of my Meg of Wapping? This tune would make a nice flute (or similar) and guitar duet for the family this Christmas. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST Date: 28 Nov 14 - 05:58 PM Here are the chords that go with the song the Ed linked. It's high. If you need it lower, ask about the wheel for changing keys. N.C. means no chord - notes are discordant. The first few notes of the song just didn't sound right, so I modified them to match the next phrase. Twas C landlady F Meg that made such rare C flip; Pull away, F pull away, G hearties! At C Wapping G she lived, N.C. at the F sign of the C ship Where F tars meet in G such jolly C parties She'd shine at the play, and she'd jig at the ball, All F rigged out so Dm gay and so G topping; For she Dm married six G husbands, N.C. and bur- Fied them C all – F Pull away, G pull away, C pull,I say; What d'ye you F think of my G Meg of C Wapping? |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 28 Nov 14 - 04:26 PM Thanks for the link, Ed. Hi, Justin. I like the song in the link, and I'll make a MIDI of it and have it posted here so you can hear how it goes. Don't go away. Click to play (joeweb) |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: Jack Campin Date: 28 Nov 14 - 10:39 AM What are you asking for, then? I can't imagine anyone will have recorded it. The tune Ed linked to (a bit like Hearts of Oak) is even worse than the words. You must know somebody who can play it to you? |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,Justin Date: 28 Nov 14 - 10:07 AM ... Unfortunately I am not accomplished enough to read musical notation. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,Justin Date: 28 Nov 14 - 10:05 AM Yes. I have made my own chord arrangement which suits it well. I suppose as is the case with a lot of these old 'broadside ballads' the original tunes have been lost to antiquity. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,Ed Date: 28 Nov 14 - 08:01 AM You can find the tune at Google Books. I'd imagine that you may have to work your own chordal arrangement, though. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: Jack Campin Date: 28 Nov 14 - 07:42 AM Have you tried trawling through the Dibdin book collections available on line? (There is one at IMSLP and another one at Google). They're more likely to have notation than a slip-song copy. Reading a thousand-odd pages of Dibdin is not my idea of fun. |
Subject: Chord Req: Chord & Tune Request for Meg of Wapping From: GUEST,Justin Date: 28 Nov 14 - 07:09 AM Is there an existing tune and chord arrangement for Meg Of Wapping? 'Twas landlady Meg that made such rare flip; Pull away, pull away, hearties! At Wapping she lived, at the sign of the ship Where tars meet in such jolly parties She'd shine at the play, and she'd jig at the ball All rigged out so gay and so topping; For she married six husbands, and buried them all – Pull away, pull away, I say; What do you think of my Meg of Wapping? |
