Thank you everybody, especially Leeneia for posting the midi tune and GUEST for chording it out - fantastic!
I am really happy about this as I have been playing a improvised tune of my own and now at last I can give this lovely song it's rightful place and serve Charles Dibdin some justice!
Now to settle down with my guitar and practice.

If I were doing this song for people, I would folk-process this line:

"For she married six husbands and buried them all"

right out of the song. The song has a happy tune, and it's about how nifty Meg of Wapping is. Keeping with that theme, I like it this way:

"She'd shine at the play, and she'd jig at the ball
All rigged out so gay and so topping;
With ribbons and laces and roses and all
Pull away, pull away, I say;
What d'ye think of my Meg of Wapping?

This tune would make a nice flute (or similar) and guitar duet for the family this Christmas.

The first few notes of the song just didn't sound right, so I modified them to match the next phrase.

What are you asking for, then? I can't imagine anyone will have recorded it.

The tune Ed linked to (a bit like Hearts of Oak) is even worse than the words.

You must know somebody who can play it to you?

Yes. I have made my own chord arrangement which suits it well. I suppose as is the case with a lot of these old 'broadside ballads' the original tunes have been lost to antiquity.

You can find the tune at Google Books.

I'd imagine that you may have to work your own chordal arrangement, though.

Have you tried trawling through the Dibdin book collections available on line? (There is one at IMSLP and another one at Google). They're more likely to have notation than a slip-song copy.

Reading a thousand-odd pages of Dibdin is not my idea of fun.
