Phil: Yes, Burgie soloing as Lord Burgess on a Stinson recording performed a superb Choucounne, a great favorite of mine. Indeed that whole album is outstanding. Miles distant from Yellow Bird.

Bob: Burgie's Euro-American interpretation of Choucoune is musically faithful to the Creole original both he and Franz Casseus (guitar) had already covered. Please do post it here if you find the Belafonte-Yellow Bird reference.

I bring up this 45 as the OP didn't mention which CD track(s) were of interest. The LP credits may or may not help. I've been asking 'Who are those guys?' pretty much since it came out. Btw the Euro was on London (LED 232.)

I've always pegged the A-side as more Norman Luboff/Richard Vaughn inspired (the latter was Arthur Lyman's engineer.) Before he left RCA Bill Porter engineered Chet Atkin's take on Yellow Bird in '62. I think Atkins' last cover was in '69 under Nashville String Band with Henry "Homer" Haynes and Kenneth "Jethro" Burns not too long after Paul died.

Re: The youtube link above, the Kingston Trio also did not cover Yellow Bird (Yes, we have no banana?) You're hearing The Brothers Four on track #1.

Hi all. I can't add much. Session information on those Monument recordings has never yet been accessible to my knowledge.

The one thing that is known is that the famous Jordanaires did the vocal backup. The instrumentation, however, is uncredited. I assume that somewhere in the Monument files, if they still exist, there must be information about the personnel on the masters; but I don't know that for a fact. As things stand now, the identities of the session musicians are a mystery.

Let's hope someday the full Monument session information can be made available. It sure would help for questions like these.

Phil, I'm not clear on how the bit you quoted applies. It's true that that single is the same story, no session information. Not sure, though, what relationship "Don't Ever Love Me" has to "Yellow Bird." Are you saying Belafonte didn't perform "Yellow Bird?" I'm away from my sources right now, but I'm pretty sure he did.

I think a few of the CD tracks were not released on the LPs. (eg. Momunent 45-450V.) Alas, no back-up credit on that center label either.

Coltman isn't much help with: "The follow-up single was weak: his cover of "Yellow Bird," the Belafonte-bred pop dilution of one of Haiti's greatest songs, "Choucoune," backed with "Kilgary Mountain," originally popularized in America by Burl Ives but in latter days associated with the Clancy Brothers. (p.179)

FYI: Belafonte's cover was actually 'Don't Ever Love Me' as bred and pop-diluted (or adapted) by Irving Burgie.

I have both of the lps (on Monument) In my hand - the only credits that can be found is to Bill Porter for engineering the "Home Made Songs" LP--it looks like there is no info on the musicians.

readily accessible web site discography (e.g. WIRZ, BSNPUBS).
BOB COLTMAN author of "Paul Clayton and the Folksong Revival" (American Folk Music and Musicians Series), Scarecrow Press 2008
might have included information in the book, or may know - anyone have contact for him ??
The PAUL CLAYTON collection at UMD (University of Mass., Dartmouth) might also have information.

Among the items I got for my 71st birthday recently was the CD reissue of Paul Clayton:Folksinger/Sings homemade songs and ballads. The notes are scant but pay tribute to the accompanying musicians, none of whom are listed. Does anyone have the original LP release. Were the other participants named?
