Subject: Mysterious missing carol book
From: Penny S.
Date: 02 Dec 14 - 02:57 PM

As I have previously posted, I am hoping to get some people carol singing round my neighbourhood (and I hope the person to whom I handed the pdf of the newsletter with the request in hurries up and gets back to me, printed out, so people know about it), and have run up against a problem.
Loads of carols I know were published in books by A&C Black. I have bought up-to-date copies of two, and hopefully a third, out-of-print at the publishers, but apparently in stock at Boosey. I have had sight of that one at school.
One carol I like, "Star in the South" originally arranged by Malcolm Sargeant turns out not to be in any of them. I've been helped to find a copy of his sheet music, so I have it, but what we used wasn't sheet music. I can see a page of the book in my mind, and I'm wondering what other carols are in that book, and what the book was. Has anyone seen this carol in a book, and can identify it for me? (It has become a bit of an obsession,) All the originals from the main part of school have disappeared, and, apparently, and oddly, no-one is using them at the moment.

A quick bit of googling came up with this.

You should find it in here (on ebay): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sargent-Malcolm-The-Malcolm-Sargent-Carol-Book-Eleven-carols-for-unaccompanie-/321578604529?pt=Non_Fic

Unfortunately, those aren't it. It had found its way into another anthology. We weren't upmarket enough to get composer specific books. Sargeant's "Cowboy Carol" is in one of them, so there isn't a copyright problem. (I had wondered if it was in an earlier edition of one of the books I've got and was then removed, but I don't think so.)

This is the contents of the book on ebay:

THE MALCOLM SARGENT CAROL BOOK
Eleven carols for unaccompanied mixed voices arranged by
MALCOLM SARGENT
Contents
   l. Earth's joy                         Mexican folk-tune
   3. Zither carol                         Czech folk-tune
   4. Lullaby                                 Korean folk-tune
   5. Nature carol                         Filipino plantation song
   6. Mary had a baby                         Negro spiritual
   7. De Virgin Mary had a baby boy         West Indian spiritual
   8. Silent night                         Franz Grüber
   9. Praise ye the Lord                 Moravian carol
10. Hawaiian lullaby
11. Cowboy carol                         Cecil Broadhurst

Oxford University Press, Music Deparment, 44 Conduit Street, London WIR ODE

It seems probable that this will be the carol found by Rahere (which is listed but unavailable). It might be worth contacting the ebay seller - maybe they can tell you the words, or at least the beginning of the carol, to check whether it is the right one or not.

Is this it ?

Who can name that bright flame which the Wise Men saw that night?
Was it some God-sent glow, or a splendid star we know?
Southward they sallied from Jerusalem:
What was the star stood over Bethlehem?
Star on the hilltop shining like a gem,
Are you the star that led to Bethlehem?
Low and high in the sky many lights amaze the eye:
All the days we must praise Him who made the heavens blaze.
Yet we believe some radiant stranger
Stood in the south above the manger.
Star on the hilltop ...
Let us, then, troubled men, humble men and reverent,
Seek a spark in the dark, and salute the firmament,
For the same light that halted on the hill
Brightens the night of all the nations still.
Star on the hilltop ...
– A. P. Herbert (1890-1971)

I googled "Christmas carol star in the south" and came up with three recordings at classicalarchives.com/work/278608html on sale at $0.99. On-line full-track preview available.

I put in a link to the Classical Archives site yesterday. It seems only to have two recordings, but they are identical. You get 45 seconds as a preview, but you can hear the full three minutes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld9UQvWP43g

Those are indeed the words - I didn't know they were AP Herbert. Others on that list are in the books I have. I'm off to look at the ebay book to see if it rings bells. Nope, the cover doesn't look at all familiar.
Plan C involves calling an old colleague who taught her class the nature carol - which is in one of the AC Black books, though.

It could be that the carol you want is in the ebay book, even if you originally had it in a different anthology. I think you should ask the ebay seller.

I can only look with title and author, though. Which I do not have, as it definitely wasn't the Malcolm Sargeant book, which was too grown up and would have stood out among the primary school stuff. But thanks for all the enthusiasm.
I have one other resource - an ex-colleague who was finagled out of her job by the academy, but had a nice touch with carols for her class. I might give her a call.
The carols may not be needed though. I put a call for singers in the neighbourhood newsletter I produce, and sent it to the person who was going to print it in colour, but she hasn't been to work because her daughter is ill, so goodness knows when the message will get out.
