I recall purchasing the LP "U.S. Male" by Elvis from Woolworths in 1975. Had a reel to reel tape before that. Man! we was poor.

Think it must have been the Paul Simon Songbook - 1966, last year at university - it ate up a lot of my grant! - I met him a few times in Bunjies but never thought to ask him to sign it or anything. It'd probably be worth a bob or two if I had.

Completely forgot about a little combo from Liverpool. A U.S. release called Meet the Beatles was definitely my first LP then I got into soul music, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Freddie Scott, Booker T and the MG's, Sam and Dave etc. and didn't get back to LPs until psychedelic rock came along.

It was probably Led Zeppelin II or Wheels of Fire by Cream or Are You Experienced by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Prior to that I accumulated a lot of 45s, the first of which was a recording of Buffalo Gals by a cowboy band, whose name I've forgotten, on yellow vinyl.

The first LP that I bought myself was a recording of Greig's piano Concerto. My first folk LP was a 10" HMV recording of field-recordings put together by Peter Kennedy. The Copper Family & Harry Cox had tracks and I was just amazed to realise that my grandfather was not alone in singing such songs!

Yes, it was 'Introducing The Ian Campbell Folk Group' Released in 1964 I bought it a couple years later. Later in the late 70's I got to know In Campbell and was very surprised to first learn, that the 20 odd tracks were all recorded in one day as that's all the time they could afford in the studio. Secondly he didn't actually possess an original copy of the album himself, so I gave him my copy. Well loved group in the birmingham & Midlands, but very underrated nationally

I can't remember, but I suspect it was a Bob Dylan record, because I do remember that in 1965 I had a tuner, amplifier, & speaker, but no turntable, and a friend of mine -- one of those "I can get it for you wholesale" types (he is actually Jewish) -- was trying to get me to buy a turntable. I was dubious, but then I reflected that if I had a turntable I could listen to Bob Dylan anytime I wanted, so I consented, on condition that he wired it up to play mono (I thought stereo was a silly fad, and continued to buy mono records as long as they were available). So he did that, and I must have bought some Dylan, tho he lost me not long after that, and I moved over to Ewan MacColl.

Only 50 years ago!

My first two albums (bought by my parents) were Elvis' first two in 1956 - followed by the debut albums of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Knox in 1957.

One of the first Columbia folk LPs, Bob Atcher's 10" "Early American Folk Songs" (issued, I believe, 1949 or '50, bought 1950). Still have it, still play it. Those first LPs hold up better than some later ones.

I do recall I only bought 2 45s in my life, the fairly odd pair of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Pink Cadillac.

The 1st record I ever bought was The Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley, but that was a 45. The first LP I bought was Another Side Of Bob Dylan.

Actually, I bought two at the same time. The second was Closer To Home by Grand Funk Railroad. I had to look up what the title was - King made a more lasting impression that GFRR.

Peter Paul and Mary - I got Moving and In the Wind. Can't remember which one I got first. Later I got the double album of Peter Paul and Mary in Concert - which was very much like the actual PPM concert I had just been to.

First single was earlier - Elvis Presley - A Fool Such as I.

This isn't fair on me! I'm only 30! Vinyl had given way to CDs when I bought my first album (Backstreet's Back by the Backstreet Boys, 1998).

However, my 39 year old husband remembers buying We All Stand Together by Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus on vinyl. He says he also bought the original German version of the Kraftwerk album, "Radio-activity" a few years after it was released (the same year as he was born!). From there, he moved on to Half Man Half Biscuit and Frank Zappa...

First LP - Holst's "Planets", BBCSO (IIRC) & Flash. Cost forty shillings & sixpence back in about 1960: beer was a tad under two bob a pint so you can work out today's inflation-adjusted cost.

My second LP was Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", after my school music teacher observed that pop music always stuck to safe formulae just when "Take Five" was about to hit the charts. I lent him the LP, he bought his own copy soon afterwards.

First album... Miles Davis Quintet... Steamin' ... Had a lot of rock and roll singles earlier and then jazz eps... Louis then Jelly Roll Morton then hit Thelonious Monk but all on ep... First gig was MJQ at De Montfort Hall in Leicester when I was 14... Folk didn't arrive till a bit later... All on the same continuum for me, beyond artificial boundaries...

The first album i bought was The Magnificent Moodies by the Moody Blues [ featuring Denny Laine on lead vocals]. Wonderful songs and great soulful vocals from Denny. Donovan did the liner notes!

The first folk rock album i bought was Liege and Lief by Fairport Convention in 1969 but the firstfolk album was The Young Tradition Sampler.
I had a misspent youth listening to the Beatles and Stones and Tamla and Soul so hearing Chicken on a Raft by the YT was real shock to my system....but i persevered.Loved it.

That old folk classic, "Ziggy Stardust" was my first LP purchase; "Jeepster" by T.Rex was the first 45 I believe.
Looks like "folkpunkrocker" and I must be about the same age; that daft Chicory Tip 45 and a not-at-all-daft one from Lindisfarne (Meet Me On The Corner) were also early purchases for me. I loved Lady Eleanor, too. Wouldn't give me the time of day though...

that said, I do remember my very first LP... I was 3 or 4 years old & I had a small portable player designed for kids. it was a narrated version of the Sleeping Beauty ballet which I played until it finally wore out.

Mom said that when I was 4, I taught myself how to pick out the melody of the sleeping beauty waltz on our old piano. never did get any better at playing that that I fear.

Wish I did, but I don't. This thread led to a fun conversation with my 86 y.o. mom tonight. She bought lots of albums and music, and probably bought most of the folk, early rock and roll and motown music my sisters and I loved -because she loved it too. I have all of the albums from our family days, an eclectic mix, and we have no clue. Neither she or I remember my sisters or me buying albums before we left home for college - do remember 45's but my Dad was prone to cleaning binges and tossing stuff so all 78's and 45's were gone, regardless of who bought them, in the poorly remembered past.   If my first lp was truly not purchased by me until I was in college, I'm guessing it was something along the lines of CSN&Y.

Memories are hard to separate when Momma was a folkie/jazz/rocker/show tunes person who spent meager money on music. What a blessing!

The Five Faces of Manfred Mann with Paul Jones blowing his balls off on the gob iron. I listened to it the other night on S....fy and it hasn't aged at all badly. A good Brit R&B classic which led me to the blues of Lightning Hopkins, John Hurt and many more.

I can't remember thr first I bought, probably the byrds, or the beatles, but I do remember being given three lps by my grandfather. the Clancy brothers sings the songs of rebellion, omar blondall's songs of newfoundland and doc Watson's songs for children--including the cat came back. I played them until they wore out.

The first LP I bought ws The Sound Of Music as a preent for my Mother. But for myself it was a 1964 album 'Presenting the Ian Cambell Folk Group' years later I met Ian and the group and followed them aound the Birmingham scene. I was amazed to learn from Ian that the album of 22 songs was recorded in one da as they could only afford one day in the studio, and even more surprised to learn that Ian didn't own an original couple of the LP, so I gave him mine. Maybe wrongly as it's now quite rare and I've not been able to find another copy!

Think it was 'With the Beatles' but can't check the date. I had 2x massive homemade speaker cabinets hung on my bedroom wall. Garrard single player was playing Beatles via RSC or RCS Amplifier (constructors shop way back) Bracket gave way and speaker landed on deck, imprinting shape of PU arm in LP. Wouldn't play after that.

Bought a John Renbourn album at around the same time, played it once or twice but didn't like it much and gave it away soon afterwards. Maybe I should give it another listen 50 years on....assuming I can find a copy.

I saw the ISB do some of the songs off Wee Tam at Nottingham Albert Hall just before the album came out.

my chief memory was the rather informal presentation. one of the band members was giving lengthy instruction to Licorice the bass guitarist/girlfriend, before the start of every song.

the guy next to me said - oh shit, i think its her first lesson!

the commissionaire of the Albert Hall - he started the concert running down the aisles shouting 'no smoking there!' however everybody on the stage and in the audience were off their faces, - sort of stared hard back at him going , yeh sure! fantastic ....man!

"Wee Tam & the Big Huge" (the double) was the third LP I bought. My friends liked it. They got used to it, anyway ;)

At least some of my friends got used to it, too, though it was a steep learning curve. I could only afford the single album (at 39 shillings and 11 pence), so had to catch up with 'Wee Tam' later.

The first 45s I bought by myself were "Duke of Earl" by Gene Chandler, "Her Royal Majesty" by James Darren, and "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. All at once, probably at the Woolworth's on 71st and Greenfield in West Allis, Wisconsin.

My first LP purchase was an Andy Williams compilation, "The Best of..." or something like that. (No, just checked and it was the Cadence LP "Andy Williams" from 1958, though I bought it in 1960 or '61.) I bought it before I expanded my LP collection to include "Moon River" and "Warm and Willing".
