Pretty much says it all, innit. What's the point of struggling down the pub when you can't drive and you'll get frostbite walking, it's so far? The only people keeping them going are those who have no choice, the alcoholics. Sad, really. Same in Wales: used to be our village had four, now it's one, and that one's so grotty nobody goes there now.

"Did you come to talk or did you come to fish?" I remember an old cartoon depicting one of those 'conversations'.

Women, now- well, a day on the water would be a lot different. In all likelihood, we would discuss everything from a difficult relationship to health issues to the meaning of life. I am so thankful I am a woman. But then, I would be, huh.

Ring....
gnu... Yeah?
Buddy... What are you doin?
gnu... Housework. You?
Buddy... rum.
gnu... Oh? Whassup?
Buddy... You haven't heard?
gnu... What?
Buddy... **** and I have gone our separate ways.
gnu... Hang on... I gotta grab a beer.

We talked for three hours. I am still in shock. A marriage made in heaven and she just "found" another guy... left... left him and the kids... !!!???

Guys don't talk unless there is shit to talk about. How odd that I started this thread when I started it. I still can't fathom the news.

Why post this? I don't know. Brings back shit from my past? Brings sadness over his plight? Both? It sucks. The kids are holding up well. Buddy? He was pretty drunk at the end of our chat so.... ?

Hehehehehee... odd. Here I am babbling on like a womenz (yeah, I know - give me some slack eh?). I must go do something manly. Watch football and fold laundry... and sniff a bit.

Man... this really sucks. I thought they were the perfect couple... 20 years... kids... thick and thin...... poof! It ain't right.

rahere - we need to get serious here. i strongly believe that all of us -men and women- have a duty to our souls and to our communities to go to the pub. there is no use complaining about good pubs closing or pubs being grotty (or full of noisy machines and young people etc) if we have stopped going because it's a bit chilly or there is something marginally less worthless than usual on TV. go to the pub! take your neighbours and re-establish your local as a good place for people to meet and talk crap while getting slightly pissed. if your pub is shit/shut whose fault is it -yours!

Not so, in my case: I came back after a very long time overseas to an area where it had already happened. It's too late now, it happened before I returned.
You can't win when the supermarkets have the volume to undercut every pub. Not to mention the calory limits I'm under...too long in Belgium.

my commiserations. i have a friend in a village near bath whose local has gone and the other pub in the village is on a shoogly nail. he's lived there 37 years and has done more than his share of the drinking necessary. he is now considering moving and who could blame him? i would go crazy without a couple of nights (more if i could afford it) in the pub, it's a mental health issue! it's tragic to see a dead village and unsettling to walk through so many - what are all the (mostly older) people doing in there? a local pub is one of the things in life that is seriously vital to our heritage. why have we -as a country- let so much that is good about our lives be taken from us? we can just blame the governments, maybe we are just crap.

If we are to be islands entirely competent unto ourselves, what the hell are we paying all these taxes for? Some villages have absolutely nothing left, no Church, no doctors, no transport, no library, minimal rubbish collection.
Planning at Council level has a responsibility to keep this in proportion: it's all very well having a self-important exprbitantly highly-paid Chief Executive and no end of Policies, but if nothing is being maintained on the ground, then the social contract by which those bigheads took responsibility for the social charge of the community is no longer being respected and someone will have to tell them where they get off. Unless they are first and foremost delivering, then the same test should apply to them as to any business: they are redundant and should be disposed of.
If we are responsible, then they are not, and should stop claiming the taxes: let us spend as we see fit, then, not as they do. They will certainly claim that it's because they get less support from Central Government, but we don't see our taxes there dropping. When it comes to cutting their coats according to their clothes, let them start by disposing of their own overheads first, because if they don't, all we will have left is the parasites and no delivery at all.
Pubs don't have to be tied to chains, we all know why beer was brewed, because of the crap water, and that was done locally. It's not difficult, and the local only arose because one brewer was better than the others. Some centralisation was useful, and the social function necessary.

i meant to write 'we can't just blame the governments, maybe we are just crap'

many -all-of us depend on all sorts of services and depend on the council to provide them for us. i agree, particularly in these days of needless and harsh austerity, they are often not able to deliver some of life's essentials. while it's good to think we should stop paying for a poor service and do it ourselves - we just wouldn't. there are still hardly any community run pubs though the benefits are evident. sadly - once they have gone, they don't come back. with a few exceptions ( the Bell in Bath is my favourite, particularly since they didn't serve Nigel Farage) - we are just crap.
