concertina was stolen from a house in Cork City yesterday evening, Monday 15th December between 8.30 and 10.30. Nothing else in the house was taken. It is a 46 key Jeffries Concertina, in a black hard case with red lining around the edges. There are 3 stickers on top of the case, 2 say Dingle Trad Fest and one Mayo Fleadh sticker. If anybody sees it or hears anything about it, could you please contact Bridewell Garda Station in Cork on [phone], or if anybody noticed anybody suspicious around Mardyke Street or surrounding areas yesterday evening, please contact the Gardaí. The concertina itself is new - looking, both straps at the side are coming apart slightly.Please keep a look out online also, and also in cash converter places. Generous reward offered if this is returned. Thank you.

There can't be many new-looking Jeffries about with 46 keys. It'll have to stay on the black market for a long while. If they try to sell it on cheap anybody who knows anything about these boxes will be alerted and anyone paying what its worth will want to know its background. We can keep an eye on Ebay. I hope he's got the serial number written down somewhere.

I would have thought the more publicity the better, if the owner wants it back.

The worrying thing about this burglary is that this concertina must have been seen at a gig and was followed home, or tageted by someone who new there was a valuable concertina in the house.You never know when you play at a gig what someone might be planning.

This looks like a targeted theft rather than opportunism.

In which case:

- there's a good chance the instrument has already left the country (I believe there is a substantial market for them with collectors in the Far East)

- this is not likely to be the last. Might be an idea to keep such instruments secured as well as possible.

I had my first professional quality guitar stolen on Burton wood services. I know this is not about me, but I know how the owner feels.
More power to Dick's efforts. If you find the culprit hand them over to old fatso here, I'll happily knock them into the middle of the following week.

What a crazy mixed-up thread! Absolutely, the theft needs as much publicity as possible. Facebook happens to have several million more contributors than Mudcat. Nobody suggested we shouldn't use Mudcat as well, or Concertina.net.

I was told that by a (serious) concertina player at Whitby. He was trying to sell a high-end concertina but wanted to do it in such a way that it stayed in England and kept on playing English music. Putting it on a worldwide marketplace would have got him a quick sale, but it might have ended up in a glass case somewhere like Hong Kong.

Thanks for coming back to me Jack.It would certainly push up the prices of Jeffries and Wheatstone concertinas if it started to get serious.The Chinese are of course manufacturing large quantities of cheap Hohner type anglos and as far as I know ,there is nobody making the mid range, or upper price range concertinas over there for anyone wishing to progress further with the instrument. It may be an interesting future development.

Alan, you may remember about 10 years ago - as a Sussex area anglo player - a lovely Japanese guy called Kenichi Gatayama who was on exchange from Hiroshima for three years to the U. of Sussex. He was doing a post-grad degree on the traditional music of Sussex. As part of his study he recorded long intensive interviews then returned several times to follow up things that he was not fully sure of.
Early in his visit he bought a good quality anglo and started to go to the local English tune sessions. By the end of his time here he was a thoroughly proficient player with a large repertoire and a good understanding of the style.
After his return we kept in contact and he used to email me photos of Irish and English tune sessions in Japan! One of them had four anglos being played in them.

Also some years ago, I had a CD to review from fRoots ( Oops! sorry for mentioning that, I forget this was Mudcat ) of a Japanese band (with two anglos) playing English tunes. To my ears, they showed 100% understanding of the genre. I made .mp3 of a couple of tracks and sent them to some leading English dance band musicians asking for their opinions. I got various replies but no-one suggested that the players might not be English. One told that that they sounded like an East Anglian band but that he did not know who they were.

Alan Day, I was talking to our local Chinese Restaurant about Concertinas and was asking why they were being made in such large numbers in China. The answer was that Chairman Mao had decreed that they were to be made as an easy instrument to learn, the Anglo that is.

Vic as part of the Duet International compilation(don't ask) I had regular dealings with a duet player called Hidetoshi Yamashita and have some recordings that have been passed over to Graham.
There are on Utube a recording of a young lady playing concertina playing English music in a group.So from small beginnings this does look as though it is an expanding market.

the problem with hohners is the action ,i discovered a way of improving this of which i am proud an old fashioned rubber cycle valve this prevents the button sticking down the hole.

I'm intrigued, Dick. Please tell us more. I presume by Hohners you mean those large buttoned boxes with melodeon reeds and buttons glued onto a wooden lever. I have several in the loft and am about to pick out the best for my grandson to learn on.
