Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Steve Gardham Date: 16 Dec 14 - 05:54 PM There can't be many new-looking Jeffries about with 46 keys. It'll have to stay on the black market for a long while. If they try to sell it on cheap anybody who knows anything about these boxes will be alerted and anyone paying what its worth will want to know its background. We can keep an eye on Ebay. I hope he's got the serial number written down somewhere. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST Date: 16 Dec 14 - 06:22 PM Terrible news Dick I will keep an eye open for it at auctions etc. Al |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: OldNicKilby Date: 17 Dec 14 - 07:11 AM Dick Why not put this on Concertina.Net? Let all the "Dealers" know it might help , but don't hold your breath , as from experience they do not always take any notice. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: The Sandman Date: 17 Dec 14 - 07:26 AM Its not my Concertina, its an Anglo, just in case there was some misunderstanding. does anyone look at concertina net? |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: OldNicKilby Date: 17 Dec 14 - 09:35 AM Sure do Dick |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Steve Gardham Date: 17 Dec 14 - 04:03 PM Saw it on Facebook which is arguably the best place for it. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: The Sandman Date: 17 Dec 14 - 05:14 PM "Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Steve Gardham - PM Date: 17 Dec 14 - 04:03 PM Saw it on Facebook which is arguably the best place for it." I would have thought the more publicity the better, if the owner wants it back. do you understand Steve, some one has lost their concertina, I am trying to help, never mind the best place for it, any publicity is publicity. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST Date: 17 Dec 14 - 05:31 PM 1. "does anyone look at concertina net? " 2. "I am trying to help, never mind the best place for it, any publicity is publicity. " Hard to believe one person made both those statements isn't it? Oh no, hang on... |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: The Sandman Date: 17 Dec 14 - 05:43 PM so now i am being attacked for posting an item about a stolen concertina. please think how you would feel if it was your concertina, I am trying to help someone get their concertina back. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST Date: 17 Dec 14 - 05:57 PM Quote: Unfortunately, Steve, Jeffries concertinas don't have serial numbers. Just saying... Hope it can soon be reunited with its owner. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST,FloraG Date: 18 Dec 14 - 03:38 AM Sorry to hear about any theft. Life would be so much nicer if we did not have thieves. Perhaps we should try to encourage all makers of musical instruments to put a unique number on ( in ) them. FloraG. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Alan Day Date: 18 Dec 14 - 04:39 AM The worrying thing about this burglary is that this concertina must have been seen at a gig and was followed home, or tageted by someone who new there was a valuable concertina in the house. You never know when you play at a gig what someone might be planning. Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST,just another cowardly guest Date: 18 Dec 14 - 05:16 AM I can't believe some cock is having a go at Dick for his publicising a concertina theft. Back off amigo. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST Date: 18 Dec 14 - 05:45 AM I just re-read though the thread, just another cowardly guest, and no-one, cock or otherwise, 'has a go' at Dick for publicising the theft. Can you point out where that has happened or we reading different threads? Indignant guest, your ID is known - and you know better than sniping like this. Pull up your socks, use your name and play nicely. ---a mudelf who has had your back in the past |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Jack Campin Date: 18 Dec 14 - 05:56 AM This looks like a targeted theft rather than opportunism. In which case: - there's a good chance the instrument has already left the country (I believe there is a substantial market for them with collectors in the Far East) - this is not likely to be the last. Might be an idea to keep such instruments secured as well as possible. |

Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 18 Dec 14 - 06:23 AM I had my first professional quality guitar stolen on Burton wood services. I know this is not about me, but I know how the owner feels. More power to Dick's efforts. If you find the culprit hand them over to old fatso here, I'll happily knock them into the middle of the following week. Best of luck Dick! |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Steve Gardham Date: 18 Dec 14 - 03:59 PM What a crazy mixed-up thread! Absolutely, the theft needs as much publicity as possible. Facebook happens to have several million more contributors than Mudcat. Nobody suggested we shouldn't use Mudcat as well, or Concertina.net. Jack, thanks for your suggestion. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Alan Day Date: 19 Dec 14 - 04:18 AM Jack I am intertestested in your posting regarding the interest of concertinas in the far East.Have you any other information regarding this ? I know of a couple of concertina players there but I did not realise it was a rapidly expanding market. Al |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Dec 14 - 04:45 AM I was told that by a (serious) concertina player at Whitby. He was trying to sell a high-end concertina but wanted to do it in such a way that it stayed in England and kept on playing English music. Putting it on a worldwide marketplace would have got him a quick sale, but it might have ended up in a glass case somewhere like Hong Kong. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Alan Day Date: 19 Dec 14 - 05:48 AM Thanks for coming back to me Jack.It would certainly push up the prices of Jeffries and Wheatstone concertinas if it started to get serious. The Chinese are of course manufacturing large quantities of cheap Hohner type anglos and as far as I know ,there is nobody making the mid range, or upper price range concertinas over there for anyone wishing to progress further with the instrument. It may be an interesting future development. Al |

I know of a couple of concertina players there but I did not realise it was a rapidly expanding market. Al Alan, you may remember about 10 years ago - as a Sussex area anglo player - a lovely Japanese guy called Kenichi Gatayama who was on exchange from Hiroshima for three years to the U. of Sussex. He was doing a post-grad degree on the traditional music of Sussex. As part of his study he recorded long intensive interviews then returned several times to follow up things that he was not fully sure of. Early in his visit he bought a good quality anglo and started to go to the local English tune sessions. By the end of his time here he was a thoroughly proficient player with a large repertoire and a good understanding of the style. After his return we kept in contact and he used to email me photos of Irish and English tune sessions in Japan! One of them had four anglos being played in them. Also some years ago, I had a CD to review from fRoots ( Oops! sorry for mentioning that, I forget this was Mudcat ) of a Japanese band (with two anglos) playing English tunes. To my ears, they showed 100% understanding of the genre. I made .mp3 of a couple of tracks and sent them to some leading English dance band musicians asking for their opinions. I got various replies but no-one suggested that the players might not be English. One told that that they sounded like an East Anglian band but that he did not know who they were. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: OldNicKilby Date: 19 Dec 14 - 07:03 AM Alan Day, I was talking to our local Chinese Restaurant about Concertinas and was asking why they were being made in such large numbers in China. The answer was that Chairman Mao had decreed that they were to be made as an easy instrument to learn, the Anglo that is. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Alan Day Date: 19 Dec 14 - 07:36 AM Vic as part of the Duet International compilation(don't ask) I had regular dealings with a duet player called Hidetoshi Yamashita and have some recordings that have been passed over to Graham. There are on Utube a recording of a young lady playing concertina playing English music in a group. So from small beginnings this does look as though it is an expanding market. Al |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: The Sandman Date: 19 Dec 14 - 08:08 AM the problem with hohners is the action ,i discovered a way of improving this of which i am proud an old fashioned rubber cycle valve this prevents the button sticking down the hole. |
Subject: RE: concertina stolen From: Steve Gardham Date: 19 Dec 14 - 05:37 PM I'm intrigued, Dick. Please tell us more. I presume by Hohners you mean those large buttoned boxes with melodeon reeds and buttons glued onto a wooden lever. I have several in the loft and am about to pick out the best for my grandson to learn on. |
