Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Feb 15 - 09:16 AM Thanks, Marty. I've had my hands full the past couple days with winter-related bull's wool and hadn't noticed the crisis here. Anywho, the singaround is TODAY. There's supposed to be some snow in the air late afternoon, but shouldn't amount to much. (Although, let's face it, anything at this point is just ridiculous.) But its a good excuse to SING, drink some winter beverages, indulge in some food and snackage, and revel in good company. See you this afternoon! Linn |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Feb 15 - 09:31 AM That was interesting. I was logged in when I posted the above, but when I went to see what had been lost in my PMS, I had to log in. Linn |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Feb 15 - 10:18 AM As I recall, I'm not planning to make it. My strep throat still isn't up for full-throated singing and there's a bit of snow to contend with. I promise to do better in March. Oh, here's the winter blues song I cobbled together: By Charlie Ipcar, 2/16/15 Tune: inspired by "Deep River Blues" Flying Off to Sunny Venezuela G-------------C7 Let it snow! Let it blow! G----------------------C Don't you think it's time to go --, G--------------------------------D7 Flying off to sunny Venezu-ela! G-----------------------C7 Snow drifts here six feet or more, G-------------------------C Now we exit from the second floor -- G--------------D----------------G Flying off to sunny Venezu-ela! Frozen pipes and frozen bones, No one hears our moans and groans -- Flying off to sunny Venezuela! So let's pack up the cat and pup, And let's not stop till we're shacked-up -- On a beach front in sunny Venezuela! That city plow goes rumbling by, Leaving snow banks ten feet high – It's time to fly to sunny Venezuela! So pour me another rum and coke, Let's fly off and that's no joke -- Flying off to sunny Venezuela! Let it snow! Let it blow! Don't you think it's time to go – Flying off to sunny Venezuela; Let it snow! Let it blow! Don't you think it's time to go – Flying off to sunny Venezuela! Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 21 Feb 15 - 02:01 PM Well, discretion is looking to be the better part of valor for me. The thought of the trip home tonight in possible freezing rain/snow has given me pause. Plus, the roof rake is requesting another session before it rains tonight. Sing one for me! Safe home to all. Subject: February Press Room (NH Shanty Sing) From: GUEST,Bat Goddess-posted 17 Feb Date: 21 Feb 15 - 02:42 PM This coming Saturday, February 21st, will be the second regular monthly Shanty, Forebitter and Ballad Session of 2015. We gather at the Press Room, Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Believe or not, this is our 15th year of monthly sea music singarounds. The days are getting longer -- there's still daylight well past 5:00 PM! And I think I just saw the first sign of Spring (despite the piles of white stuff) -- bird poop on the porch rail. Saturday should be a good day to come sing at The Press Room and indulge in some good food, drink, and winter companionship and community. Not to mention singing! Please come this Saturday; let's make the rafters roar! Linn |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bupkes Date: 21 Feb 15 - 03:50 PM I started out for Portsmouth, but the snow/rain is coming down, traffic is slow, and while I wouldn't mind heading home in such, a round trip doesn't seem wise. (Sigh) Sending you locals who made it warm thoughts, good cheer, and hopes to sing with you all in March! Marty |

Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Feb 15 - 06:17 PM Glad everyone stayed safe -- we had a delightful small session. Not a lot of people in the pub, either. And I brought two of them, besides myself. The drive home after dropping off Gail and her sister Janice was slow and on the tedious side. 25-35 mph all the way, but not a lot of traffic and everyone was driving sensibly. Time consuming, but not horrible. Today...I goofed off. And I'm continuing to goof off. Haven't even brought my notes in from the car. Tomorrow... Linn |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Feb 15 - 12:14 PM First of all, if the January thread isn't restored and anyone needs to see what songs were sung, I have the list archived in my records. The crew this snowy February day was me (Linn Schulz, nom de Mudcat Bat Goddess), Dianne Lavoie, Emery Hutchins, Bob Eaton, Phillip Bufithis (who plays harmonica) from York, ME, Ernie Pigeon (NbptErnie) and Amy from Newburyport, MA, Alan Eaton, Dave Nune, Bruce MacIntyre, and Ted & Cecilia from North Hampton, NH who had been threatening to come since the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in September. I think we didn't scare them away so there's a fighting chance they'll be back. Towards the end of the session a young woman named Melissa came over from the bar (where she'd had some drink taken), aimed right at me, expressed her pleasure with the singing (and tried to show us her new tattoo on her side which was still bandaged). She's recently divorced and repeated that she felt safe with us and here at the Press Room. She shuffled off back to the bar in a little bit. What we sang -- 1. Old Zeb - Emery Hutchins 2. Plum Island National Anthem - Linn Schulz 3. The Robert Whitworth - Ernie Pigeon 4. Winter Shanty - Bob Eaton 5. Isle au Haute - Dianne Lavoie 6. Snow Falls - Ernie Pigeon 7. Rolling Down to Old Maui - Emery At this point, I decided to try to work some weather magic... 8. May Song - Linn 9. It's Nice to Get Up In the Morning - Bob 10. Little Sally Racket - Alan Eaton 11. Molly Malone - Phillip Bufithis (on harmonica -- some voices joining in) 12. Congo River - Dianne 13. Maid of Amsterdam - Linn (requested by Cecilia; I think I sang a verse she'd never heard before) 14. Cape Cod Girls - Alan 15. Rattle Them Winches - Ernie 16. Roll the Old Chariot Along - Emery 17. If Not For the Whiskey – Dave Nune 18. A Long Time Ago – Bob 19. All For Me Grog - Alan 20. Shawnie-Town - Emery 21. Cannery Shed - Linn (I read Dianne's mind, evidently) 22. The Can Do - Ernie (about a Gloucester vessel in the Storm of '78) 23. Molly Malone - Cecilia Neville Murray 24. Rolla Bolla - Bruce MacIntyre 25. Strike the Bell - Alan 26. Away, Rio - Emery 27. The Rosabella - Dianne 28. Hard Times - Ted Leigh 29. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn 30. Shallow Brown - Bruce 31. Dredging Is My Drudgery - Ernie 32. Banks of Sicily - Emery 33. Harbors of Home - Linn 34. Boys of Killybegs - Bob 35. Pay Me My Money Down - Emery 36. Marching Inland - Dianne 37. The Lobster - Linn 38. Pubic Hair (parody of "Baby Face") - Dianne 39. Keep On Fishin' - Bob 40. Whaling - Ernie 41. The Adventures of the Rear Admiral and His Maid (recitation) - Linn 42. Tattooed Lady (Kingston Trio version) - Bob 43. I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me - Dianne 44. Gin Was Mother's Ruin - Linn 45. Don't You Remember Cape Ann? - Ernie 46. Shipyard Apprentice - Bob (first song Bob sang at The Press Room -- at Tom's instigation) 47. Johnny Lad - Linn (one of my favorite of Tom's songs which I just learned) 48. Slav Ho - Ernie 49. Great West Road - Dave 50. Clear Away the Morning - Bob 51. The Athens Queen - Ernie 52. 45 Years - Dianne 53. Nelson's Prayer - The Company Because of the weather and the fact that some singers left early because of it, we wrapped the session around 7:15. As usual, please let me know of any additions (I sometimes space it) or corrections. Thanks for coming! Linn |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 23 Feb 15 - 06:02 PM Wish I'd been there! I also have the Jan. 2015 song list in Word form if needed (actually I've got them back to April 2013). Don |
Subject: RE: Feb. Press Room Shanty Session 2/21/2015 From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Feb 15 - 09:58 AM We missed you, Don! But I figured the weather forecast was the deciding factor. I stopped taping the sessions when Tom lost his voice, but I have the song lists on j-cards for 2002-2009. I'm not sure if I started posting what we sang in 2010 or the latter part of 2009. I've been working on beating the earlier lists into submission and some sort of consistency. I'm not sure when exactly I started keeping records on who the "crew" was -- both singers and listeners. The monthly session started in January 2003 and for the first year it was the second Saturday of the month. Then Tom realized that choice interfered with Indian Neck, Mystic, and other dates, so in January 2004 we started meeting on the third Saturday. Jay Smith, the founder and original owner of The Press Room died in September 2002. That was the first year we had a Press Room open sing during the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival -- as a Jay Smith memorial singaround. Tom then decided to get the Press Room okay to have a monthly session starting right after the new year. Linn |
