Subject: Finally Got All My CDs On SDHC Card
From: Rob Naylor

Phew! I now have ALL my CDs on a single SDHC card that I can plug into my car's music system. 374 of them, taking up just over 20 Gb of space on the 32 Gb card, leaving space I estimate for another 180 or so albums!

Backed up onto a second card and an external HDD.

Now all that remains is for me to get 200+ vinyl albums into digital format, which I suspect will be a *much* bigger task :-)

Don't think I'll bother with the singles.

So now my driving will be subject to the distraction of too much choice in music selection.

What file format did you use?

Various: a mixture of wav, wma and mp3 depending on what the original CD was recorded with. All good enough for car listening, which is what I wanted it for.

I recently finished putting all my albums onto an iPod (via iTunes, backed up to an external drive). I play it through my car's radio. According to iTunes, I can have non-stop music for more than 19 days if I want. I enjoy listening to all 7000+ songs in alphabetical order instead of by album or artist. It makes for an eclectic mix -- I have large collections of some rather disparate music genres, so some interesting juxtapositions come up. Also little mini-concerts, like five versions of John Barleycorn in a row, or an hour of traditional French music when I get to the L section.

Rob, I started digitizing all my LPs a few years ago. I finally finished, but only after giving up on digitizing albums that I can get on CD. I still had around 100 that never made it to CD. It is a time-consuming task, especially if you want the digital versions to be divided up into individual songs instead of just having the whole album as one file. Worth the effort, though.

My media storage of choice is a flash drive. I bought a 16 GB flash drive yesterday for $6.99 US, and I think I'll dedicate that drive to Scottish music. My 2012 Honda Civic will accommodate up to a 32 GB drive - I got one of those yesterday for $12.99. I can hold 10 CDs of music on a 700 MB CD, and my folder of CDs has served me well. The flash drive should be even better. I haven't rented a car in the last few years that didn't have a USB port, so I've been taking a flash drive full of music and audiobooks when I travel.
But now I can't use the USB port for charging my phone, so I got a plug-in charger for the phone. Ain't technology wonderful?

As a performer I play all my backing tracks on an mp3 player/mixer, which takes SD cards. Recently started selling our music, (which was always available on CD) on a USB thumb drive, & it has been going really well. We perform to older audiences & I wondered if they would be tech savvy enough for a new format, but they jumped on board.

Congrats! By dead reckoning you may now drive olde Route 66 seven times over without hearing a repeat! Then again, if you were planning on taking the Pan-American Highway south I'm guessing you're probably only to the Canal Zone so better get busy with the vinyl :D

Be sure to leave one of those back-ups at work or with a friend.

Sounds good, Rob. My music is in various forms all over the place, it's time to corral it for that kind of listening. And for backup. Anything I ever bought via Amazon is in in my account with them so I have a lot I listen to at work or streaming, but the unique discs (many from Mudcatters) need to be backed up and then I'd listen to them more often.

The question is: what will the digital programs of the future be like - and will our current digital files be playable/readable/executable in 10, 20 and 30 years' time?

I still have my vinyl and my paper - just in case!
