Just watching Stefan Grossman's DVD of this guy. He is national treasure. What an amazing revival musician/singer - what incredible stories, he has to tell. I hope you have archived this guy adequately - he is a really articulate and insightful witness to a great period of American music.

Been listening to Geoff for a long time, Al. If you haven't already, also check out Jim Kweskin, Stefan Grossman, Peter Siegal, etc. on youtube. Follow the sidebars to other links. Have fun.

i suppose the first time i heard of him was The Blues Project Elektra Sampler. Leaving Here Blues,   Downtown Blues, I'd rather be the Devil.

Not much of him since then. We had Maria Muldaur's Midnight at the Oasis hit. but she had apparently split up with him already by then.

I was first captivated by his voice on the first Kweskin Jug Band record when I was in High School. I had a recording of him and Maria and their daughter singing Tennessee Blues that I love. He did some fine recordings with Amos Garret as well. I got the Texas Sheiks album a few years back and it was great.
Geoff played Hugh's Room in Toronto right after Martin came out with their Geoff Muldaur model. He was playing the prototype and he said, "I got them to make me a Gibson."
While I admire his guitar playing a lot, it's Geoff's vocals that made me a fan.

A truly great singer, I saw him (with Amos Garret!) at the Childe Harold in D.C. back in the 70's and his voice filled up that tiny room. He has a way with country blues but his musical range is way beyond that. Richard Thompson said something like "there are only 3 white blues singers and Geoff Muldaur is two of them".

Why does this thread include the phrase, "whats wrong with America?"?

At least us Yanks can spell his name. :)

I always assumed that Big Al was a Yank. That's assuming that you mean "residents of the United States" by "Yanks" and not just those north of the Mason/Dixon.

I thought Big Al was from G.B. Maybe he'll come along and clear it up.
I think Geoff Muldaur has gained a fair amount of fame or notoriety or whatever you want to call it, at least among the folks I know. You don't get a Martin signature edition unless you have some kind of following.

sorry about getting the name spelled wrong - it has to do with the number of letters allowed of a thread title.

i am English - never been to America.

sorry if i offended anybody. nothing wrong with America. i just wish you;d make a bit more fuss of Geoff.

Thread title fixed. --mudelf

I agree, Al, he's a smart man and a witty and talented performer. I've heard him interviewed on public radio and he has a lot of interesting stuff to say. Fresh Air interview about Texas Sheiks

From the perspective of this Yank, there's a great deal wrong with America. And you're right, we should make a much bigger fuss of Geoff.

Al, my remark was intended as a good-natured gibe, nothing more.

I can't find a youtube link to one of my favorite GM performances, Sloppy Drunk Blues, off the excellent Blues Boy CD. Plenty of Geoff on Spotify though.

One of my favorite singers of all time, and it's a great pleasure and honor to be able to fiddle behind that splendid voice. Geoff and Jim Kweskin will be recording in March with some of the Texas Sheiks (me and Cindy Cashdollar) and I can't wait!

the thing about Geoff and Jed Marum - for that matter - they have committment, and yet they are accessible to the average listener.

in this country we seem so very bothered about getting an ethnic sounding music - that many average listeners will be completely nonplussed.

you are lucky to have such wonderful artists.

I've been fortunate to have seen him perform in Berkley and Cambridge (USA) via Concert Window several times in recent years, Always a pleasure.

Suzy - I'm tickled pink to hear y'all are going to be recording again. Please keep us updated on the progress of the project.

While you're at it - see if you can talk Geoff into recording "I'd rather be the Devil" again.

I met Geoff at Waterville Valley festival in New Hampshire in 1966. I was there with my wife and two small children. He and van Ronk had a room next door, and they talked all night. I asked them to take their conversation out to the common room, but they ignored me.
I finally packed up at 3 am and left for home. On the way past the reception desk, I asked the clerk to put in a wake up call in Geoff's room at 6 am.
I've always wondered if she did it. :-)
I think one thing that is wrong with America is the lack of consideration for others.

Not a grudge. Haven't thought of that in years. Seeing his name here brought it backup.

1966 -
mind you the Mac Coll threads go back to mild altercations in the 1940's...

we really need that statute of limitations.

Just thinking Kendall - if you'd had a tape recorder Van Ronk and Muldaur in conversation - you'd have made a fortune sold it to Rolling Stone!
