Awhile back someone posted a thread asking how tall Ewan MacColl is.
Person posting said something about just "a general curiosity."
I forget exact words but something to that effect. So I too have a general curiosity about how tall Sandy Denny was.

I have often wondered if anyone knows for sure how tall Sandy Denny was? I believe she was not too tall and maybe the same height as me, just under 5'2" or maybe she was a little taller.

I guess it is a strange curiosity as the person who posted question about Ewan Maccoll's height but I always wonder about female singer's heights when they are not too tall, like me. :-))

I think I read somewhere that Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac is about 5'2" and Linda Ronstadt also 5'2" although she looks a little taller then that to me (even when not wearing heels.) I think Janis Ian is on the short side too but don't know her height.   
So I am always curious about singer's who are 5'2" and under.
Maybe strange curiosity I know. :-))
Well all I can say sometimes when you are short you wonder who else might be short too that are famous.

I don't know, but as usual the internet can provide evidence of a sort.
Here's a photo of her with four guys who appear to range from 6" to 18" taller than her:

The guys appear to be ordinary humans, so it seems safe to conclude that she's no taller than about five foot two.

They don't seem much taller than her, if any.

And, though you didn't mention her, I've seen Iris Dement in concert three times and was surprised at how short she looked. Like the others, she has a powerful voice, and maybe that makes me expect them to be taller. But I think a lot of great singers are very short.

Thanks for all the photos of these petite ladies. The one of Sandy Denny next to the guys, well that is about where I stand when standing next to guys who are around 6' tall. Also similar like that one with Janis Ian.

It's funny, years ago in the 60's & 70's it seems like guys liked short woman but nowadays most guys seem to prefer tall or at least medium height woman (unless of course you are talented and look like Sandy Denny, Linda Ronstadt or Stevie Nicks (ah, which I don't :-))

I know height shouldn't matter, but in real life, I find that a lot of guys nowadays look for the tall /medium height woman.
Read some personal ads for singles not too long ago and so many guys (not all young guys either) but middle-aged men looking for tall women. Not looking for short woman who are 5'2" or under. :-(

For me, height has nothing to do with whether I'm attracted to a woman, and I can't see why any man would care about that one way or the other. I've often heard tall women lamenting that their height makes men not interested in them. This is the first time I've ever heard it the other way. It's good to know that women are finding new things to feel insecure about; that's the only way we men stay in control. But I suspect that a man specifying tall in a personals ad is just trying to say that he doesn't subscribe to that well-known mythical prejudice against tall women.

I did hear one instance of tall women being favored in the workplace. I don't know whether it's true. A woman in the Netherlands told me that IcelandAir only hires tall women as stewardesses. It's hard to believe that sort of prejudice would be tolerated by law in any modern nation.

The Dutch woman also told me that a friend of hers had surgery to make her legs 6" longer so she could get the job. So even if there is an emerging preference for tall women, apparently you're not stuck being short any more than you're stuck with the hair color you were born with.

I read some years ago that Dolly Parton is 5'1" tall but I think she usually wears very high heeled shoes so probably looks taller. Linda Ronstadt does look taller then 5'2" to me even when not wearing high heel type shoes. I am 5'2" myself but people always think I am shorter - so I guess some people just appear taller/shorter even if they are around the same height.
My guess is Sandy Denny is about 5'1" or 5'2"

Remember singer Brenda Lee? I think she is quite petite in height too. Maybe 5"0" or 5'1"
I think the late actress Elizabeth Taylor was 5'2."

Was watching some of the Oscars on television. Most of those young actresses are giants! Long, long legs - not too many short ones on the program, maybe Reese Witherspoon the only one on the shorter side compared to the other actresses. (saw her standing next to Nicole Kidman.)on the program.

I have been able to establish two important height-related facts based around people in this thread:-
1] Sandy Denny was exactly the same height as Alexandra Elene MacLean Lucas.
2] Ewan MacColl was exactly the same height as Jimmy Miller.

Janis Joplin was also rather short. The one time I had the pleasure of seeing her, the bottle of Southern Comfort she was drinking from was at least half as tall as she was. Then again, it may have been an optical illusion caused by a really big bottle of Southern Comfort.

By one of these very strange coincidences, I was looking at the cover of the "Fotheringay" LP today, and if the portrait on the front is anything to go by, she was a good head shorter than anyone else in the band, and this is confirmed by the band photo on the inside of the double sleeve.

Kenny: the Fotheringay LP cover is highly unrealistic and cartoon-like, except for the faces. It shows the men in the band all about the same height.

The link in the second post of this thread is to a photo of the band. It shows that the heights of the men vary quite a bit, but Sandy Denny is considerably shorter than any of them.

Probably her daughter who lives in Australia would know the answer.

Unless it is actually mentioned in one of the books about Sandy, I don't know who would know for sure accept maybe someone in Sandy's family.
Or a close friend might know.
Or if you ever happened to have stood next to Sandy and were the same height.

Don't know if you would hear from any family member though or the chance that someone stood next to her (and the same height) would read this and reply. Probably not or odds are not great to hear from any family member or friend who knew her well.

I must disagree with Jenny here - 5'2" is not short. My wife is 4'10" and I always insist she is normal. The taller we all grow, the more we weigh; the more we weight the more food we need. If this obsession with "growth to potential" continues, perhaps the world really might run out of food. Small is beautiful.
