Subject: Help with 'Prestigious Folk Artists'
From: Vic Smith
Date: 26 Feb 15 - 07:15 AM

Stuart Reed has drawn my attention to an article in the Brighton newspaper, "The Argus". It begins:-

Celebrating Folk Singer

A RENOWNED folk singer and bellringer is to be celebrated with a concert.
The Timeline Choir will perform works from the collections of Henry Burstow and other prestigious folk artists, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Lucy Broadwood.

I am delighted that Henry - Horsham's finest - is being remembered and celebrated in this way but could someone help with information about the other two 'prestigious folk artists'?

Did they do gigs as a duo?

Did they front a folk/rock band?

I shouldn't have referred to Vaughan Williams as an artist, after all "composer" is a distinguished title in itself.

That said, his contribution to collecting, standardising and saving traditional tunes is about as "up there" as you can get.

Hi Vic,

As I read it, it's about, Henry Burstow, and other prestigious folk artists, and a composer, and a collector, making five or more people in all. Will you let us know after the concert who these unnamed artists were (assuming you're going)?

Bye

Ralph was quite artistic and he must have sung all those songs before doing his arrangements.

I couldn't find it in the Argue pages but if anyone is interested it's the 28th March in Horsham.
Shame newspapers can't learn to just cut and paste rather than add their own spin on things.

The Brighton Argus is indeed an august journal. Among its previous noteworthy headlines:

LOCAL WOMAN HURLS TRUMPETS AT DUCKS
    and
WINDOW CLEANER KILLED BY GIANT PENCIL
