Don't know about in the States but over here many smaller birds will attack predators like crows to protect their eggs or even moreso their young. We don't have that problem too much in our garden. I think the crows and pyes are too wary of the sharp-beaked blackbirds but they do frequently target young stoggies (woodpigeons) and rip them to pieces. Whilst this can be distressing and messy it does keep the stoggie numbers under control to some extent. The parent birds will try their hardest to fend off the crows but the persistence of the bigger birds always wins in the end.

In some ways, I like the lyrics we have in the Digital Tradition. This line is good:
Shearwater swoopin on an old gray whale, north winds whippin' up the sea
I don't know if that's typical shearwater behavior, but I can imagine it.

Whatever the case, this is a wonderful birdwatcher's song, and it brings up a phenomenon I've often wondered about. I sometimes see blackbirds of various varieties, attacking much larger birds, especially buzzards and raptors. Anybody know something about this phenomenon, and can you explain it to us? Why are they attacking a much larger bird? It's not only the corvids that do this - redwing blackbirds do it, too (or are they corvids?).

We're going to include Cindy Kallet's "Wings to Fly" in the upcoming Rise Again songbook. Here are the lyrics from Cindy's Website, http://cindykallet.com/

WINGS TO FLY (Crow)
(Cindy Kallet)

Crow mobbing up a hawk on soar
Clouds soaring in the sky
Me working down here on this rocky old earth
Working on wings to fly, good lord
I'm working on wings to fly

New friend's catching up a fish tonight
He's gonna haul 'em 'til the stars come tumbling down
Me, I'm riding high tonight
Been dreaming of him coming around, good lord
I'm dreaming of him coming around

Geese come rising out of the field
Heading to the eastern shore
Me, I'd fly on every wing
Just to find you something more, dear friend
Just to give you something more

Shearwater swooping on an old gray wave
North wind scooping up the sea
These cold autumn days make me run with joy
Looking for a way to be free, good lord
I'm looking for a way to be me

This moon's gonna keep me walking tonight
This sky is gonna make me sing
All I want is to share with you
Something of this feeling, dear friend
You're something of this feeling

Crow mobbing up a hawk on soar
Clouds soaring in the sky
Hammering down here on this rocky old earth
Working on wings to fly, good lord
I'm working on wings to fly

Here are the Digital Tradition lyrics. You can see there are problems...

WORKIN' ON WINGS TO FLY
(Cindy Kallet)

Crow mobbin' up a hawk on soar
Clouds soaring in the sky
Me, I'm down here on this rocky old earth
Working on wings to fly, good lord, I'm workin on wings to fly

New friends catchin' up affairs tonight
He's gonna them till the stars come tumblin' down
Me I'm ridin high tonight
Dreamin' of him comin' around Good Lord, thinkin' of him comin' around

Geese come risin out of the field, headed to the eastern shore
Me I'd fly on every wing
Just find you something more dear friend,
Just to give you something more

Shearwater swoopin on an old gray whale, north winds whippin' up the sea
These cold autumn days make me run with joy
Lookin' for a way to be free Good Lord
Lookin' for a way to be free

This moon's gonna keep me walkin' tonight,
The sky's gonna make me sing
All I want is to share with you
Something of this feeling dear man, something of this feeling
