Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 02 Mar 15 - 03:42 PM Wild Mountain Thyme! How could you not.......?? Depends a bit where you are too: I see you've got a few Scottish ones in there, but up here you'd also have to have: The Jeely Piece Song Bonnie Glen Shee Jock Stewart Kelty Clippie Pittenweem Jo Doon in the Wee Room Yellow on the Broom and I could go on.....next please! |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 02 Mar 15 - 04:14 PM Auld Lang Syne? And in Scotland, songs such as Bonnie Glenshee, Yellow on the Broom (Adam McNaughtan), Tatties and Herring, Wild Mountain Thyme…. And, thinking of a much-missed friend :- So here's a health to the company and likewise my lass. Let's drink and be merry, all out of one glass. Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain For we may and might never all meet here again. |

Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: GUEST Date: 03 Mar 15 - 07:15 AM Thanks for those additional suggestions. How could I forget "Wild Mountain Thyme"? Some of the Scottish songs are not familiar to me - must see if I can refresh my roots and visit some chorus sessions "north of the Border". I'd thought of "Rolling Down to Old Maui" but thought it belonged more in a shanty section. I liked the parody of it heard recently "Slowing down to Lethargy". |

Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Jim Carroll Date: 03 Mar 15 - 02:00 PM This always rings my bells Jim Carroll DRINKING From the singing of Ewan MacColl who recorded it from Beckett Whitehead some time in the 1930s Some people will tell you that drinking's a curse, While others will tell you it's quite the reverse. Some drink all their days their time to employ Some drink when in sorrow and some drink for joy. Some drink when they're christened, some when they're wed, Some are drinking your jolly good health when you're dead, Some drink on all these occasions, like I, For I drunk at my birth and I'll drink till I die. Ch. For I mean to get jolly well drunk, I do. I mean to get jolly well drunk, I do As long as I'm here I'll stlck to my beer, For I mean to get jolly well drunk, I do. I'll drink till the high price of coals becomes small, Till ale and roast beef they cost nothing at all. I'll drink till we have no more reasons for strikes, Till a man values work just as much as he likes. I'll drink till the law gives a man no denial For taking a wife out a month upon trial, Till the dukes and the lords have to sort clean from dirt And the big Prince of Wales has to clean his own shirt. I'll drink till all landlords choke as they guzzle. I mean to keep drinking till bobbies are muzzled. Till dandies are worth nowt but the clothes they put on. I'll drink till old Peabody's money is gone. I'll drink till the laws of the land are made fair That punish a man for killing a hare. I'll drink till all wealth is shared out amongst men And I'll drink and I'll drink till it's shared out again. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Mar 15 - 02:17 PM Ha, but which "Rolling Home"? There's Rolling Home to Caledonia, Rolling Home to dear old England, Rolling Down to Old Maui, and John Tams' Rolling Home. Any of them! |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: FreddyHeadey Date: 03 Mar 15 - 03:35 PM Les, it's a great list & a great idea. I've downloaded it but the print out is coming out all wrong for me. It is seeing eight sides of A4(2 x A5 per side) but the > File > Page Setup doesn't look like the one I usually see. In the past I've printed a 16 page document onto 4 sheets with settings of > 2 per side & > Print back to back. I don't kmow what I'm doing wrong here. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: FreddyHeadey Date: 03 Mar 15 - 04:35 PM One thing I was wrong about - "...I've printed a 16 page document onto 4 sheets " -those were pdf documents. With word I'm lost. But I'm taking another look at the settings. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 04 Mar 15 - 03:16 AM Hi Freddy, sorry it is a bit tricky. It's supposed to print back to back and fold as an A5 folding booklet with staples down the middle - perhaps a step too far? |

Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Brian Peters Date: 04 Mar 15 - 05:26 AM Let Union be in All Our Hearts Pleasant and Delightful The best chorus singing I think I've ever heard was at an early-hours session at Girvan Folk Festival, where 'The Star O' the Bar' fair took the roof off. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: FreddyHeadey Date: 04 Mar 15 - 06:41 AM :) Easier at 8.30am I might have clicked some settings yesterday. Today started afresh... printed fine. I see they're in A-Z order. I wonder if you should put a date on the cover in case you add some more. I know it would be another sheet of paper but a blank page or two (printed 'NOTES') might actually be handy. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: GUEST Date: 04 Mar 15 - 09:14 AM Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I'm passing them on and you'll hopefully be helping to start a good new chorus singing session near Lincoln. Thanks for the download, Les in Chorlton.Perhaps we will be able to join you one evening. Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Will Fly Date: 05 Mar 15 - 04:22 AM I'll just add that Roger Bryant's "Cornish Lads" is worth a mention. Great chorus - and almost a Cornish national anthem these days. Here it is sung by my old mate Mike Nicholson: Cornish Lads |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Rozza Date: 05 Mar 15 - 06:26 AM I'm in deepest Lincolnshire, Les. But I'll make a note of your dates and who knows? Thanks for that, Will Fly. Mike Nicholson is a fine singer! |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Will Fly Date: 05 Mar 15 - 06:36 AM He is indeed - he was our main guest at the recent Brighton Acoustic Session in the Lord Nelson in Brighton last Monday. I'll be seeing him at the monthly village singaround in Charlwood next Monday, where we're both regular attendees and, if memory serves, he's guesting at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club (Elephant & Castle pub) on March 21st. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Brian Peters Date: 05 Mar 15 - 10:07 AM Cadgwith Anthem |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Rozza Date: 06 Mar 15 - 11:34 AM I've added that one to the list. Thanks Brian. |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Hesk Date: 07 Mar 15 - 05:08 AM I've probably missed it, but I can't seem to see "The Farmer's Toast", otherwise known as "The Jolly Farmer", or "God Speed the Plough". Brian's suggestion of "The Cadgwith Anthem" could also do well in a list of the most murdered chorus songs. There is always someone who thinks that they can sing the repeated word "Away" higher than any one else, that then becomes a competition. The only result is a cacophony of sound! |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 07 Mar 15 - 12:55 PM Not sure that Rolling Down to Old Maui counts as UK. Gay Fusilier |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Brian Peters Date: 07 Mar 15 - 01:38 PM Oh dear, Hesk, I think that might have been me going for the high harmony on 'Cadgwith Anthem'... |
Subject: ADD: I Thought I Had No Voice (Scott Murray) From: Borderer Date: 07 Mar 15 - 03:09 PM This song really deserves a place in a list of great chorus songs, but maybe you don't know it yet. Scott Murray sang for us in the Rolling Hills Folk Club last November. His song was recorded by Roy Bailey and you can see/hear him on YTube. I Thought I had no Voice by Scott Murray 2012 I THOUGHT I HAD NO VOICE (Scott Murray) We've had good times thegither We've shared a song or two (twa) In warm days o' summer (simmer) And winter's days o' snow. (snaw) We ken that life's no easy The road is hard and long (lang) But music aye can cheer us We're better for a song. (sang) Chorus I thought I had no voice Now listen to my song. The fellowship of music, A place where I belong. We raise our voice in song, In every verse and chorus. Many songs behind us now There's many waiting for us. Our time is nearly over These days are nearly done The tunes we will remember The songs will still be sung. I hope the sun shines for you And that we'll meet again. For there's a bond between us A bond that has no end. Have a good sing, Ron

Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Mar 15 - 06:59 AM That could almost start another thread on "best parting songs". Apart from "Auld Lang Syne" to the usual or older tune: The Parting Glass (Irish version) Kind Friends and Companions (Sheila Stewart) When First We met (Alan Bell) In Freenship's Name (?trad) Sae will we Yet (Ok, a refrain rather than a chorus!) Tak a dram afore ye go (Ian Sinclair) Parting Song (Dave Webber) Any more? |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: Ged Fox Date: 11 Mar 15 - 07:04 AM Loath to depart We're no awa' tae bide awa' - which also belongs in the list of best chorus songs |
Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: GUEST,mayomick Date: 11 Mar 15 - 10:25 AM You have Nightingales Sing but miss out The Sweet Nightingale. Grandfather's Clock is American, I think , and Whisky in the Jar Irish. Otherwise a good selection . |

Subject: RE: Best UK Chorus Songs? From: GUEST Date: 01 Sep 16 - 01:58 AM Lots of good chorus songs in the UK but the one that ivites people to really get into it is "The French shall never drink old England dry". Here's a Holdstoc version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XjzdBYlmYI |
