Is there a formula or a rule of thumb or worse, a musical law regarding the consruction of vocal rounds? Or do you just wig it and hope the sillybills line up?

The main point to remember is that the point where the parts overlap should be notes from the same chord. Take apart any familiar round- Row row row your boat, for example, and you'll find that every line follows the same chord pattern. Best of luck!

It's inside the most protected part of your deep feelings, lyrics walk by themselves, the musician will make it feel like a song. Maybe, I make it too easy since I'm an Italian with a strong tradition, but first of all look inside yourself, you are the artist, another artist that could also be you will make it music, not so much problems but: learn from mistakes.
