Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: GOLD (John Stewart) From: GUEST,Eric Date: 10 Sep 10 - 03:00 PM Marc here they are. Some of John's Bloodliners have worked out chords and tab for 4 to 500 of John's songs [see link]. For the earlier poster - Kanan is a road or valley in California [LA I think]. (Am) (F) (Am) (F) When the (Am)lights go down in the California town (F)People are in for the (Am)evening. I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar, My (F)heart beating time with my (Am)breathing. (F)Driving over Kanan, (Em)singing to my soul, There's (F)people out there turning music into (Am)gold. (F) Now, my (Am)buddy Jim Bass, he's a-working, pumping gas, And he (F)makes two fifty for an (Am)hour. He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tapping on the cans, (F)Sings rock and roll in the (Am)shower. (F)Driving over Kanan, (Em)singing to my soul, There's (F)people out there turning music into (Am)gold. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gold (John Stewart) From: GUEST,Marc Date: 10 Sep 10 - 08:45 AM I have always loved this tune and am trying to learn to play it. The lyrics seem easy enough to decipher, but the chords still elude me. Does anyone know the chords to "Gold"? Thanks! |

When the lights go down in the California town, People are in for the evening. I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar, My heart beatin' time with my breathin'. CHORUS: Drivin' over Kanan [sic]*, singin' to my soul, There's people out there turnin' music into gold. 2. Well, my buddy Jim Bass he's a-workin' pumpin' gas, And he makes two-fifty for an hour. He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans, Sings rock and roll in the shower. CHORUS 3. Ah, the California girls are the greatest in the world. Each one's a song in the making, Singin' rock to me. I can hear the melody. The story is there for the takin'. CHORUS TWICE REPEAT VERSE 1; CHORUS TWICE People out there turnin' music into gold People out there turnin' music into gold People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold [*I have no idea what Kanan is, but that's what I found in the lyrics I copied. I would think "Canaan" but I can't find a town in California named Canaan, either.] |
Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: glueman Date: 27 Jun 08 - 09:15 AM I shouldn't like Fleetwood Mac. They're everything that's wrong with music of that era; bloated, corporate, hippy-lite, swinging, pharmaceutically enhanced, self-indulgent rock monsters and harpies. But they wrote stunningly good pop tunes. Buying old Eagles albums can only be a matter of time. Mamas and the Papas are the masters of the genre and Michelle Phillips is still hot. Just thought I'd share. |
Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: GUEST,Chris Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:35 AM Heard it this morning on my way to work, and definately recognized Nicks and Buckingham in the background. For a 25 year-old absolutely in love with everything Nicks-related, I'm going to pick up this album tonight on my way home. - Chris |
Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: GUEST,Eric Date: 29 Apr 08 - 04:04 PM Just for info John Stewart died in January this year [I am bloodliner - John's email list]. Gold is a good pop song but nowhere near as good as his best songs. He is a true writer of what became to be called Americana. Try Mother Country for "folk" song. |
Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: PoppaGator Date: 29 Apr 08 - 02:24 PM I remember hearing this on the radio however many years ago, and assuming that it was a Fleetwood Mac and/or Stevie Nicks song. I don't follow contemporary pop music closely enough to listen to the DJs if and when they identify a song's artist. (It's not like I'm gonna go shopping for the recordings.) Definitely a catchy tune, nicely done and with a memorable lyric (even to someone who only catches the most obvious repeatred words). Nice to learn who's really responsible for it! |

Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 28 Nov 99 - 02:20 AM Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham (I believe) in the background. The song is called "Gold" and is written and performed by Jon Stewart, from a 70's album with the intriguing title, "Bombs Away, Dream Babies". Jon was one of the original members of the Kingston Trio. Jon's written a lot of very fine songs; it's well worth catching up with his other stuff. Probably his best known song was one that was recorded by the Monkees - "Daydream Believer". Sorry I don't have the complete lyrics for "gold" but here's what I have: Gold When the lights go down in the California town and people are in for the evenin' I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar my heart beatin' time with my breathin' Drivin' over Canaan singing to my soul there's people out there turning music into gold Drivin' over Canaan singing to my soul there's people out there turning music into gold Now my buddy Ken Bass, he's a-workin' pumpin' gas and he makes two-fif' for an hour He's got rhythm in his hands and he's tappin' on the cans; sings rock 'n' roll in the shower Drivin' over Canaan singing to my soul there's people out there turning music into gold Drivin' over Canaan singing to my soul there's people out there turning music into gold |

Subject: RE: Non folk - turning money into gold From: Date: 28 Nov 99 - 02:00 AM John Stewart is the singer, I think the title maybe simply Gold. Stewart was a member of the Kingston Trio and went on to record many albums solo. Although it predates Gold, I recommend his "Phoenix Concerts-Live" album. I don't know if it is on cd, I played the vinyl to death. Interesting footnote, he wrote "Daydream Believer" that became a hit for the Monkees. John |
Subject: Non folk - turning music into gold From: alison Date: 28 Nov 99 - 12:09 AM This is a pop song, (hence the non folk in the title)... pity I got the title wrong though Heard it last night and it's bugging me... chorus went along the lines of "people out there turning music into gold" Sung by a man, backing vocals were definately Stevie Nicks. Anyone know what the proper title is and who sang it.. Thanks slainte alison |
