Ah, the Books of Oranmore, more numerous than the solitary Buck of Kells.

There have been several periods since the early days of the Gaelic League, when sets of Irish words have been consciously produced to popular tunes from other cultures/countries - including Nazi Germany, but that's another story! I've never heard a set to "Johnny...".

Regards

P.s. At a concert in a yacht club near Galway a few years ago, I heard a shanty called "Rolling homeward to Oranmore" . Next day, as I queued at a supermarket checkout, I was subconsciously humming the tune as I tried to remember the words... "My uncle wrote that!" Said the checkout girl! He wrote "an Cailín Álainn"!

GUEST,Aodhán, all I can report is no luck. I'll keep looking but I don't have much hope at this point.

How do you know I'm not? It's also not necessarily the case that the tune for this song is not Irish, even if the most famous words put to the tune are in English. I like the tune; I don't see why it should be a problem to want Irish words for it. I sing the great An Cailín Álainn, also; should that be excluded because it's the same tune as the "Mingulay Boat Song". I don't think so. Now, if you cannot answer my actual question, then perhaps you should just ignore this.

Why not look for songs composed in Irish instead? It's not like there's any shortage of them.

Hi,

I'm going around humming this great tune to myself and I wonder are there any lyrics in Irish that go with it? I'm bringing up my baby through Irish so I'd prefer to pass on songs in the Irish as part of this. Thanks a million.
