Would tend to play Si Beag Si Mor a bit slower than the Planxties ( Planxtys?), so if you're going to make it part of a set, suggest you do it first as it's easier to go up a notch speedwise on changing tunes than going down one! On the other hand, if you do it twice through with repeats of A and B tunes, it's probably long enough as a stand-alone tune. (We have a lovely 3- part arrangement which I hope Turlough would also like! )

Agree that Southwind would be a good one to add to the other 2. (It also incidentally makes a good parting song as in Ewan McVicar's "All the Tunes in the World").

Prefer PI in D ( there's just a couple of C#s below D whistle range): it gets awfully shrill in the B part if you play it in G IMHO!

thesession.org has versions of Planxty Irwin in both G and D (and, for some reason, C). I believe I learned it from O'Neil's, where it's in D (I think. My copy of O'Neil's is buried somewhere and we're painting the two front rooms and everything's piled in a heap.)
One of the contributers said they play it in G if whistle players show up, but would rather play in D when there are fiddle and mandolin players.

Another 3/4 tune that is usually attributed to O'Carolan is Hewlett, aka Planxty Hewlett.

If you play Planxty Irwin in D there are notes below the low D that some instruments can't get. It's more "natural" as a G tune, if you take my meaning.

We have always done Fanny Power in G, then gone into D for Irwin. It's a smooth transition, but it makes a clear distinction between the songs.

The South Wind is a lovely tune but it needs great advocacy to avoid sounding a bit turgid. For my taste, it's a bit too similar in feel to Planxty Irwin to be a good companion for it. Only an opinion!

Morgan Magan is a beautiful, lively Carolan tune which would go nicely after something a bit reflective. Lord Inchiquin is also very nice. To be honest, we don't usually put Carolan tunes together in sets but there are no rules! If you go to www.harmonica.co.uk and hit Music Downloads, then scroll down to Feb-March 2014, you can hear two pissed blokes playing Morgan Magan totally off the cuff in a noisy pub. One of those blokes was me!

Planxty Irwin is a good tune to play around with, a bit of arranging, harmonising and embellishing sort of thing, and Turlough would be proud of you.

Maidenhead 'Waltz' set is 'Emma' (in Em) into F P in G - I have heard Emma called The Swedish Waltz and The Russian Waltz (in D m) but is in fact Finnish .

Thanks folks, we play Fanny Power actually into Planxty Irwin - just looking for a third. Will try Si Bheag, Si Mohor, I find Give me your Hand a bit tricky - but a brilliant tune - will also check out Carolan's Concerto

Fanny Power actually goes into Planxty Irwin quite nicely, both in G.
FP into Give Me Your Hand ( not O'Carolan but sometimes attributed to him) also works.
