Well, after doing as Dick suggested, I see the lyrics are there from the Apr99 update, as posted by me ~~ must have been in that earlier thread that no one seems to be able to locate.

As to the Lowe Stokes recording on Document, someday I am going to have to turn loose of a whole batch of money, just for Document CDs alone!

Document recently reissued Lowe Stokes' 1929 recording of 'Wish I had stayed in the wagon yard' (the first ever) on 'Lowe Stokes Vol 1' Document DOCD 8045. Earl Johnson's 1930 recording also has been reissued by Document. Tony Russell describes it as 'an exquisite parable of an unfortunate countryman's experiences in the big city that might have been plucked from an 18th century broadside'.

If you go up to the DigiTrad Lyrics Search at the top of the page, and enter [wagon yard] --the square brackets indicate that the two words constitute a phrase-- you'll find it.

As usual, CDNow has found a way to make my link in the other thread to their sound file inoperative. Try this one ~~ it SHOULD take you to CDNows page for the Any Old Time String Band. Wagon Yard is the fourth clip, and is a generous one minute long. If the link does not work, just go to CDNow, and enter any old time in the search blank. That'll do it.

Check here for an earlier thread. I think you will find out quite a bit about this old song ~~ no tune, though. We mention an earlier thread which I still can't find.

Does anybody remember a rueful cowboy song that has a repeated line that goes something like: "I wish I'd bought a half a pint and stayed in the wagon yard!"? I would like to have the words and tune. Thanks for your help!
